국문 초록

이 연구는 고려시대 마애불의 조형적 특성을 밝힌 것이다. 삼국시대에 시작한 마애불은 통일신라 말과 고려 초를 지나면서 전국적으로 확산이 되었으며, 철불(鐵佛) 유행과 함께 지방의 특유한 개성적인 표현으로 다양한 불상의 모습으로 조성되었다. 대부분의 고려 마애불은 예배대상으로 전통적인 바위신앙, 풍수사상 같은 민속신앙이 결합된 모습으로 마을 가까이나 마을에서 멀어진 깊은 산속이나 산 정상에 이르는 여러 장소에 다양한 모습으로 조성되었다. 그 표현방식은 고부조, 중부조, 저부조, 선각(線刻) 그리고 불신(佛身)은 바위면에 부조로 새기고 불두(佛頭)는 별석(別石)으로 만들어 올리는 방법 등 더욱 다양해졌다. 고려 초에 만들어진 다수의 거대한 마애불들은 강한 매스와 양감을 가진 개성적인 불상들이다. 이는 지방색과 함께 강한 조형의지와 대담한 표현력을 추구하고 있지만, 주변의 자연 환경과는 전반적으로는 잘 어우러지는 자연주의 조형성을 지닌다. 이 시대 마애불들은 거대한 크기와 개성적인 불안(佛顔)을 통해 신통력과 이적(異蹟)을 일으키는 부처상으로 표현하고 있다. 대부분의 초기 마애불들은 비례를 통한 균형 잡힌 불신과 사실적인 표현이 무시되고 장대한 크기의 불신을 통해 매스가 강조되는 괴체 중심의 괴기스러운 위엄을 실은 모습으로 만들어 졌다. 또 다른 한편 권위나 괴력에서 벗어나 종교적인 자애심이 가득하거나,지극히 인간적인 상이 만들어 지기도 한다. 종합하면 여러 지역의 많은 숫자만큼 조성되어진 마애불은 그 지역적인 특성과 함께 독특한 개성적인 불상들이다. 구체적 조형표현에서는 전반적으로 삼국시대 이래 전통적 조형의식과 조형성을 계승하면서 얼굴 중심의 정면성의 표현을 강조하고 있다. 도상의 구성 또한 비대칭적이며 자유롭다. 또한 선, 면, 양감, 공간 등 여러 조형요소를 아우르면서 절제된 양감과 면, 그리고 선적인 구성을 하고 있다. 고려시대 마애불의 조형성은 이 시대 마애불만의 특유한 것이 아닌 한국적 보편적 조형성에 수렴하고 있다. 이것은 자연에 순응하는 자연주의 미학의 모습이다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to explore the characteristics of the Rock-cut Buddha Relief in Goryeo Dynasty. This relief appeared first in the Three Kingdoms period spreaded out all of the country around the end of the Unified Silla Kingdom and the beginning of Goryeo Dynasty. The Rock-cut Buddha Relief shows unique and idiosyncratic local characteristics. Most of the Rock-cut Buddha Relief which had been worship monument like totemism for rock, Feng Shui Thought, and folk religion was manufactured from around village to remote area such as mountain or mountaintop. It has variety in type such as high relief, middle relief, low relief, and linear relief with specialty using rock for body and isolated stone for head. Many of the Rock-cut Buddha Relief made in the early of Goryeo Dynasty which have powerful mass and volume are idiosyncratic. It has local characteristics and contains strong artistic will of creator, however, it has natural characteristics of art. Through gigantic scale and unique character of Buddha Rock-cut Buddha Relief of this era, it contains Buddha's image with supernatural power and performance of miracles. Most of the early Rock-cut Buddha Relief shows grotesque dignity through gigantic scale and powerful mass ignoring proportion and realistic image. On the other hand, it also shows religious love or perfectly human image. To summary, the Rock-cut Buddha Relief carved as many as villages has its local characteristics and uniqueness Its way of expression focuses on frontality of Buddha's face centered, its composition is asymmetric and quite free. It shows its restrained volume, plane and linear expression harmonizing various elements of design, such as line, plane, mass, and space, etc. The characteristics of the Rock-cut Buddha Relief of Goryeo Dynasty has not its own characteristic but universality come from tradition. It is a naturalistic aesthetics adjusted to the mother of nature.
