『退溪集』의 體裁와 그 意味

국문 초록

『退溪集』은 우리나라 古文集의 표본이 된 문집이다. 이『退溪集』은 그 이전까지의 문집과는 달리 書簡이 중심이 된 문집이다. 『退溪集』 이전까지의 문집에서 書簡은 散文의 한 종류로, 작품성이 높은 일부 것들만 수록하는 것이 일반적이었다. 그러나 『退溪集』에서는 書簡이 양적으로 문집 전체의 3분의 2 이상을 차지하고 있을 뿐만 아니라, 내용적으로도 비중 있는 것들이 다수를 차지하고 있다. 이처럼 書簡의 비중이 크게 높아지면서, 『退溪集』에서는 그것을 對方人物을 기준으로 ‘時賢.知舊.門人.家人’의 네 부류로 분류해서 편집하였다. 時賢은 당시의 名士들이며, 知舊는 실제 벗을 포함한 친분을 갖고 교류한 인물들이며, 門人은 당시 退溪學團을 형성한 제자들이며, 家人은 집안사람들이다. 이 네 부류에는 退溪가 활동하던 당대의 주요인물들이 대부분 망라되어 있다. 그리고 그들에게 보낸 書簡 내용에는 학문적인 것에서부터 정치ㆍ사회ㆍ문화 전반에 걸친 그 시대의 주요한 관심사가 대부분 망라되어 있다. 한 마디로 退溪는 書簡을 매개로 당대 조선의 전 지성계와 밀접한 관계를 맺으면서, 정치.사회.문화.학술 전반에 걸친 주요 관심사를 화두로 소통한 것이다. 이와 같은 측면을 전면에 부각시켜 편집된 문집, 다시 말하면 書簡이 중심이 된 문집은 작품과 그 창작활동이 중심이 된 전래의 문집이 아닌, 인간과 인간관계가 중심이 된 문집이라고 하지 않을 수 없다. 특히 『退溪集』의 경우, 書簡의 경우에만 書簡 왕래가 있는 인물들과 그들과의 관계가 중심이 되어있는 것이 아니다. 다른 詩文 작품에서도 그들과의 관계가 중심이 되어 있다. 『退溪集』이 간행된 이후 그 체재를 따른 우리나라 古文集에서는 이러한 면이 더욱 두드러진다. 조선후기에 이르면, 문집이 그 문집의 저자와 그 저자를 중심으로 복잡하게 얽힌 채 역동적으로 움직여가는 인간관계의 망을 보여주는 하나의 작품으로 읽히는 경우도 흔하게 발견하게 된다. 우리나라 고문집의 상황이 이와 같다면, 앞으로 古文集을 읽을 때 그와 같은 측면에 특히 초점을 맞추어서 읽어야 할 것이다.

영문 초록

『T oegye Work Collection』 is a literary collection mainly consisting of letters. The literary collections prior to 『T oegye Work Collection』 generally treated letters as a kind of prose and included those with high literary values. But the letters not only account quantitatively for two thirds of the entire 『T oegye Work Collection』, but the vast majority of them are qualitatively outstanding. Likewise, as the letters outweighed the other forms of literary works in 『T oegye Work Collection』, it compiled them on the basis of who received his letters by dividing them into the four categories of ‘sages, close acquaintances, pupils, and family members.’ Sages were celebrated individuals at that time; close acquaintances were those with whom T oegye had a friendly contact, including his friends; pupils were those who had been taught by T oegye and formed the T oegye academic circle; and family members were literally his family members. Most of the influential figures at a time when T oegye was actively engaged in social activities were contained in the four categories. And the letters which T oegye sent them dealt with almost all the significant concerns at that time as to the whole aspect of politics, society, and culture, not to speak of academic issues. In short, T oegye had a close relationship with the entire intelligent community of then Chosun by using letters as a medium and communicating with them by treating major concerns as prime topics regarding politics, society, culture, and academy. His work collection, which was compiled with those aspects emerging at the front, has no choice but to be described as a collection focusing on the relationship between human beings and human beings, not a traditional collection focusing on works and creative activities. In particular, in case of 『T oegye Work Collection』, his relationship with those who got in touch with him was handled as a supreme matter not only in the field of letters but in the fields of other poetry and prose works. After the publication of 『T oegye Work Collection』, the ancient work collections in Korea, following its system, became more famous for those characteristics. In the latter part of the Chosun Dynasty, it is frequently found that a work collection was read as a kind of work to show the complicated and entangled human network, which was dynamically moving ahead while focusing on its author. If it is all about what Korea’s ancient work collections genuinely are, we have to read them, giving special focus on every aspect as soon as when we start doing so from now on.
