국문 초록

김종직의 문인으로 무오사화 때 희생당한 인물들에게, 우리는 사림파라는 이름으로 동질성을 부여하는 경향이 있다. 그러나 그 동질성이란 것이 명확하게 규정되어 있지는 않다는 점은 그다지 중요하게 여겨지지 않고 있다. 그들은 김종직의 문인으로 간주된다는 공통점을 가지고 있기는 하나 그것이 어느 정도의 결속력을 지니고 있는지는 아직 검증된 바가 없기 때문에, 사림파라는 어휘는 그 의미가 다소 불분명한 상태로 계속 사용되고 있음을 부정하기 어렵다. 본고는 이러한 점에 착안하여, 김종직의 문인으로서 무오사화 때 희생당한 남계 표연말의 행적을 추적해 보았다. 이를 통해 김종직과 그의 문인들 사이의 유대감이 어느 정도였는가를 가늠해보기 위해서였다. 이러한 연구가 의미가 있을 것이라 생각한 것은 표연말이 ‘佔畢齋로부터 斯文의 학통을 전수받았으며 그 문하의 여러 학자들이 선생이라 칭하며 감히 字를 부르지도 못하였다.’는 평을 들을 정도였기 때문에 그 양자의 관계가 이른바 ‘사림파’가 가졌던 유대감을 어느 정도 드러내 줄 수 있을 것이라 사료되었기 때문이다. 결과적으로 볼 때, 실제로 표연말은 자신과 김종직과의 관계를 그다지 깊은 것으로 여기지 않았을 뿐만 아니라, 무오사화가 발발할 무렵에는 그의 부관참시를 주장하던 집단에 포함되어 있었다. 그리고 자신과 김종직의 관계를 애써 부정했으며, 문제가 된 「조의제문」의 내용에 대해서도 알지 못한다고 주장하였다. 이는 그의 주장이 사실이었는가의 여부를 떠나서 그가 생각하고 있던 ‘사림파’는 지금의 우리가 생각하는 것만큼의 동질성과 결속력을 가지고 있지 못했던 것으로 봐야하는 근거가 되는 것이다. 역사에 기록된 것으로 볼 때, 표연말의 환로는 성종조보다 연산군 때가 더욱 순조로웠다는 사실도 주목할 만하다. 특히, 훈구파의 핵심이라 할 수 있는 사가 서거정을 두고 표연말 스스로 자신은 그의 문인이라고 말했을 만큼 친밀도를 대외에 천명했던 것은 그의 정치적 입장이 과연 어디에 있었는가를 다시 한 번 생각게 한다. 이러한 점을 보면, 훈구파와 사림파의 대립이 세력과 세력의 충돌이라는 관점을 완전히 부정할 수는 없다 하더라도, 같은 그룹으로 분류되면서도 사안에 따라 서로 엇갈리는 정치적 행보를 보이고 있다는 점에서 두 그룹에 속한 인물들의 성향을 섣불리 예단하는 일은 재고되어야 할 것으로 사료된다.

영문 초록

We have tendency to give the same quality as the name of ‘Sa-Rim-Pa’, sacrificed in ‘Mu-Oh-Sa-Wha', to the followers of Kim jong jik. However, the point that the same quality is not clearly prescribed has not been seriously considered. They have same quality that they are regarded as the followers of Kim jong jik, but the strength of their unity has not been verified yet. Hence, we cannot deny that the term ‘Sa-Rim-Pa' has been used vaguely. Paying attention to this point, this study tracked down the achievements of Nam Kye, Pyo yeun mal, who was victimized in ‘Mu-Oh-Sa-Wha' as the follower of Kim jong jik. Through this study, we could estimate the bond between Kim jong jik and his followers. We can easily find that this topic is worth studying, since Pyo youn mal was commented that ‘He received the scholastic mantle from Kim jong jik, so the fellow pupil could not dare to call his surname.' Hence, the relationship between the two could reveal the bond of so-called ‘Sa-Rim-Pa'. In conclusion, Pyo yeun mal didn't consider the relationship between himself and Kim jong jik so intimate. In addition, by the time the outbreak of ‘Mu-Oh-Sa-Wha’, Pyo yeun mal was included in a group who asserted the damage of Kim jong jik's dead body. Also, he tried to deny the relationship between himself and Kim jong jik, and he claimed that he did not know about ｢The Memorial Address of Emperor Yi｣, the political issue of that time. This fact, whether it is true or not, can support that the ‘Sa-Rim-Pa’ he thought did not have the same quality and bond as we consider. Seeing the record in history, the face that Pyo youn mal‘s official career was smoother in the King Youn san gun period than the King Seong-jong period is worthy of note. Especially, Pyo yeun mal said that he was the follower of Sa ga Seo geo jeong who can be considered as the core person of ‘Hun-Gu-Pa’ to clarify their intimacy. This makes us to think about where his political position was. Viewing this point, we cannot deny that the antagonism between ‘Hun-Gu-Pa' and ‘Sa-Rim-Pa' was the conflict between the powers, but the point is that they are classified as same group while they showed different ways as the political matters. We should reconsider before predicting the character who are belonged to each group.
