『명심보감』의 사상적 특성 연구

국문 초록

한국에서 『명심보감』은 현재 완본과 초략본 두 가지가 번역되어서 읽히고 있다. 아직까지는 완본보다 초략본이 더 널리 읽히고 있고, 또 초략본외에 완본이 있는 줄을 모르는 경우도 많다. 그 때문에 대개 『명심보감』을 동몽서(童蒙書)나 권선서(勸善書) 정도로 이해하고 있다. 그러나 적어도 완본을 들여다보면 단순하게 볼 수 없는 면이 많다. 유교와 불교, 도교의 글들이 두루 실려 있고, 그 가운데 유교의 글들이 압도적으로 많다. 그러나 그에 못지 않게 큰 비중을 차지하고 있는 것이 도교의 글들이다. 특히 원대를 지나면서 유교와 불교가 쇠퇴한 반면, 도교는 흥성하고 삼교합일이라는 사상을 확고하게 정립하였으므로 『명심보감』의 편찬을 가볍게 볼 수 없다. 이에 『명심보감』의 사상적 특성을 밝히는 작업이 요구된다. 『명심보감』에 대한 기존의 연구는 대개 저자나 판본, 유통과 전승 등 서지학적 차원에서 이루어졌다. 그리고 사상적 특성에 대해서는 유가적이라거나 도가적이라거나, 또는 유·불·도가 어우러져 있다는 인상 비평 수준을 넘어서지 못하였다. 본고에서는 『명심보감』이 편찬되던 시기의 사회적 문화적 배경과 사상적 배경을 먼저 살펴봄으로써 그 사상적 특성과 의의를 더욱 명확하게 밝히고자 하였다. 『명심보감』은 겉으로 드러난 것과는 달리, 도교적 사유가 바탕이 되어 편찬된 책이다. 편찬자의 의도는 좋았으나 학문적 역량이 부족하였고, 또 확고한 사상적 또는 사상사적 이해가 없었기 때문에 삼교 각각의 독자적인 사상이 살아나지 못하고 또 잘 어우러지지 못하였으며, 오히려 세속화된 경향을 보여주었다.

영문 초록

In Korea, there are two versions named Myeongsim Bogam明心寶鑑, which are original version and abridged version. At present, abridged version has been read widely, and most people do not aware of whether original version is or not. To make it more worse, Myeongsim Bogam is estimated and treated as a guide book for children or a book for moral training. But it is taken in naively and superficially. We have to focus on the variety and diversity of writings which are represented Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism. Two thirds of Myeongsim Bogam is related with Confucianism, but it cannot be taken as Confucian writing. Myeongsim Bogam is simple in appearance but more complicated in philosophy or thought. When Myeongsim Bogam had been compiled in early Ming Dynasty, Taoism had reached the zenith philosophically and socially but Confucianism and Buddhism was in decline. The compiler lived at Hangzhou which was a city being developed commercially and culturally from Song dynasty to Ming dynasty. He intended to compile a book for the people who are not interested in moral life and the Tao. In this study, I investigate the social and cultural background, philosophical background from Song to early Ming dynasty. And then I analyzed the preface and contents of Myeongsim Bogam. As a result, it made clear that the compiler could not have achieved because of his insufficiency of scholarly talent and philosophical insight. Myeongsim Bogam had been compiled on the basis of Taoism and its unity of three religions but had an inclination to secularization.
