국문 초록

이 글은 1910년대 계몽의 기획에 대하여 근대소설과 근대화의 관계를 중심으로 일목요연한 관점을 통해 논의하는 정리 논문으로서의 성격과 가치를 지닌다. 1910년대는 근대 국가의 성립과 관련한 외적 계몽의 소설들과, 주체적 개인의 발견과 관련한 내적 계몽의 소설들이 공존한 때이다. 근대 문학의 한국적 형성이 대략 윤곽을 갖춘 것도 바로 이 시기에 와서이니, 1910년대 소설의 위상을 검토하는 일은 곧 한국 근대문학의 근거를 탐색하는 일이 된다. 한국 근대소설의 형성 과정에 관한 전체적인 구도를 염두에 둔다면 1910년대 이루어진 계몽의 기획이란, 문학 텍스트의 내부로부터 자발적으로 또는 귀납적으로 생겨난 자연스러운 결과가 아니라 텍스트 외부의 정치적 담론 형식으로 먼저 형성된 것이었음을 알 수 있다. 따라서 계몽 담론의 형성은 일차적으로는 작가 층이라 할 수 있는 지식인의 역할과 사명에 영향 받았다. 국민 계몽에 대한 당위적 의무로써 그들은 문학하기를 선택했으며 계몽에의 지칠 줄 모르는 의지가 각각 소설에 관한 나름의 인식을 낳았다. 여기에서 우리는 이들이 속해 있던 민족적 상황을 엿보게 된다. 미(美)의 사회적 효용성이 국가라는 이상적 체제 구축을 향해 과도하게 강박되어 나간 데에는, 근대의 유입과 관련된 동양인의 고유한 환경이 고려될 수밖에 없는 것이다. 특히 소설은 근대 계몽 담론의 형성에 있어 가장 중요한 미디어로서 기능한다. 민족 단위의 지역어가 근대소설을 만드는 구성 요소로 작용하고, 또한 근대소설은 지역어의 표준화와 대량 보급에 결정적인 매체로 활약한다. 근대소설은 민족 공동체의 감정과 의식을 균일하게 통합하는 근대적 문화 제도로서의 의미를 지닌다. 국어를 확산시키며 민족을 의식화하고 정서적 통합을 주도해 나가는 힘을 가지는 것이다. 칸트 식으로 미숙함에서 성숙함으로 나아가는 근대적 주체 형성이란, 무엇인가에 의해 자극되고 동화되지 않으면 불가능하다. 이로써 소설의 심미적 효용성은 각광 받는다. 이어서 근대를 건설하고자 하는 욕망이 서사에 내면화되기 시작하면서 근대국가의 성립을 꿈꾸는 소설들이 본격적으로 나타나게 된다. 이는 소설이 정치적 상상력을 발원으로 하는 서사적 충동의 소산임을 강조하는 입장과 상통한다. 근대소설은 근대국가의 성립과 함께하고 그 규범적인 통치권 안에 들어와 있다는 것이다. 전통 서사와 결별하려는 내러티브가 국가 혹은 국민이라는 새로운 목표를 표상하면서 구사되는 실제적 예로는 신채호의 『꿈하늘』과 「용과 용의 대격전」 등을 들 수 있다. 또한 공동체의 운명에 투기하는 개인은 근대소설이 지향하는 작중인물의 아이덴티티를 가장 집약적으로 추출하여 지시한다. 반면 근대인의 탄생이란 개인이 국민으로 호명됨과 동시에, 치밀하고도 비판적인 세태 감각에 노출되는 일련의 과정이라고 볼 수 있으며 이때에는 국가를 전면에 내세우는 사상성이나 계몽성이 뒤로 숨는 양상을 보인다. 양건식의 「슬픈 모순」과 현상윤의 「핍박」에서처럼 자아와 세계의 갈등을 문제적으로 또 내면적으로 인식하는 문장들이 서사에 표면화되면서 근대소설은 부조리한 근대사회 위에서 살아가며 근대적 감각으로 대꾸하는 하나의 주체적, 개성적, 현실적 인간을 구현하는 경지에 이른다. 통틀어 1910년대 계몽의 기획은 근대소설과 근대화의 관계 속에서 때로는 거시적으로 때로는 미시적으로 당대를 살아낼 인식 틀을 형성하였다. 그것은 비단 문학 텍스트에만 국한된 것이 아니었기에 궁극으로는 역사를 움직이는 문화적 울림이었던 것이다.

영문 초록

This report has its nature and value as a review paper that intends to discuss potential scheme of Korean enlightenment in 1910’s from a plain viewpoint, particularly on the basis of associations between modern novel and modernization. In general, the 1910’s in Korea means a period when some Korean modern novels oriented to external enlightenment concerned with the materialization of modern country, while others oriented to internal enlightenment concerned with discovery of a subjective individual. In addition, it is the 1910’s when the figure of Korean modern literature became profiled even roughly. Accordingly, review on standing of novels in 1910’s means exploration into foundation of Korean modern literature. In the light of overall composition about birth and evolution of Korean modern novels, it is found that the scheme of Korean enlightenment in 1910’s is not spontaneous or inductive result from the inside of literary text, but is generated in form of political discourse outside literary text among others. That is why creation of popular discourses about enlightenment was directly influenced by original role and mission of the intellectual who acted as literary authors. They chose to do literary works as a part of mandatory duty for national enlightenment, and their tireless will of enlightenment gave birth to respective perceptions about modern novels. Here, we can peep into national circumstances where our forefathers lived. In order to explain why the social utility of beauty got excessively obsessed with building ideal social system of modern state, it is inevitable to consider original context of the Eastern people in association with introduction of modern civilization. In particular, novel works as the most crucial media among others in creating discourses on modern enlightenment. Regional ethnic languages work as a component of modern novels which play a pivotal media in standardization and nationwide propagation of regional languages. Modern novel has significance as a part of modern cultural system to uniformly integrate sentiment and consciousness of ethnic community. It has a power to propagate one national language, make consciousness of one nation and lead the emotional consolidation of people. Kantian creation of modern subject evolving from immaturity to maturity is a mission impossible without motivation by or assimilation to something. That is why the esthetical utility of novel became spotlighted among the people under enlightenment. Next, as desires for building modern state become internalized into epic or narrative literature, there are a series of modern novels that dream of establishing modern state. This tendency is consistent with a standpoint emphasizing that novel is a product of epic urge coming from political imagination. That is, it indicates that modern novel gets along with the establishment of modern state and stands within the reach of its normative governmental control. For instance, Shin Chaeho’s “Dream in Sky” and “The Hardest Battle of Dragon versus Dragon” are practical examples of Korean modern novel where narrative is about to make a break with traditional epic literature, but is commanded to stand for new goals like state or nation (citizen). Moreover, individuals who speculate in the destiny of community tend to most intensively extract and direct identity of ideal characters pursued by modern novels among others. On the other hand, it is inferred that the birth of modern person involves a series of procedures where individuals are called ‘citizen (nation)’ and are also exposed to elaborate and critical sensitivity to contemporary social conditions, where certain ideology or illuminativeness to put a state to the fore tends to be hidden behind. As shown in some modern novels like Yang Geonsik’s ‘Sad Contradiction’ and Hyeon Sangyun’s ‘Suffering,’ a chain of emerging literary texts which critically or internally perceives conflicts between ego and
