The purpose of this study was to provide learning materials for elementary school students" writing focusing on such statement methods as description, narration, explanation, and demonstration.
The study proceeded in the following process; first, the literature and previous studies on statement methods were reviewed. Based on the results, the characteristics of statement methods were examined according to the types; second, the educational contents and textbooks related to statement methods were investigated and critically considered to apply them to elementary school students; and finally, the content elements of a learning sheet were chosen to develop specific learning materials with which to teach statement methods.
The learning materials for writing focusing on the statement methods were presented in a way to help the students learn the basic principles according to the types of statement methods including description, narration, explanation, and demonstration and to apply them to actual writing involving all those types. In basic writing, the students learned about the essence, principles, and application by understanding the meaning of each type of statement method, exploring their characteristics, and engaging in expressions. And in integrated writing, they completed a piece of writing based on the functions of the statement methods they mastered in basic writing.
The learning materials were devised based on the stages of direct teaching to help the students learn how to write paragraphs using the statement methods. By integrating the reading and writing area, the learning materials suggested activities to make a contribution to writing skills. The tasks of each goal were defined clearly and divided in segments so that the students could solve problems independently and study the materials in stages. The methods and principles of educational contents were emphasized so that the students could reach the learning elements of evaluation. That is, the teachers first provided explanations and demonstrations to help the students learn the simple functions and gradually engage in independent learning about strategies and functions. As a result, the focus was shifted from the teachers to the students, from basic functions to integrating functions, and from declarative knowledge to procedural knowledge.
In short, the learning materials focusing on such statement methods as description, narration, explanation, and demonstration can supplement the problems with the current writing instruction inclined towards a certain discourse structure and be divided in applicable groups in school, thus serving as instructional materials for balanced writing. And they can be applied in a selective or gradual manner according to the learning elements of the statement methods in the activities of writing various types of texts according to the statement methods.
