국문 초록

  1930년대 문화현상의 하나로 꼽을 수 있는 것이 야담의 성행이다. 야담대회는 매번 성황을 이루었고, 야담 잡지는 절판을 거듭했다. 이렇게 한 시대를 풍미했던 야담의 중심에 윤백남이 있었다.
  본고는 1930년대 야담가로 이름을 떨쳤던 그의 야담 활동을 추적하는 데서 출발하고 있다. 야담 활동은 야담대회, 야담방송, 야담 잡지 발행으로 나누어진다. 야담대회에는 매번 수 백 명의 청중이 몰렸으며, 야담방송은 청취자들이 시간을 늘려 줄 것을 요구했다. 드라마틱하고, 막힘없으며, 적절한 언어ㆍ몸짓을 사용한 탁월한 구연으로 청중을 사로잡았던 것이다. 또 잡지 『월간야담』은 불황의 출판계에서 홀로 엄청난 판매 부수를 기록하며 1930년대를 야담의 시대로 만드는 데 일조했다. 이 모든 분야에서 당대 최고 야담가로서 그의 명성을 확인할 수 있다.
  윤백남에 이르러 야담은 흥미 중심의 오락물로 자리한다. 1927년 11월 김진구가 주도하여 창립한 朝鮮野談社는 민중 교화를 목적으로 하고 오락성을 곁들여 근대야사를 주로 구연했다. 반해 윤백남은 흥미를 목적으로 전대의 야담을 현대적으로 개작하는 양상을 보인다. 이러한 변화의 이유는 1930년대가 암담하고 불안했기 때문에 대중을 위로해 줄 필요가 있었으며, 야담을 이야기의 일부로 인식한 결과였으며, 불특정 다수의 대중을 대상으로 한 데서 찾을 수 있다.
  그의 야담 활동에 대한 대중의 열렬한 환영과는 반대로 지식인들은 비판을 서슴지 않았다. 현실 문제에 대한 진지한 고민 없이 재래적 정서로 대중의 현실 도피 심리를 부추긴다는 이유에서이다. 이러한 비판은 1930년대 야담이 겸허히 수용해야 할 것이다. 하지만 그의 야담 활동은 과거 지식층의 전유물이었던 야담을 대중이 향유할 수 있도록 한 점, 우울한 현실에 대중에게 웃음과 위안을 줌으로써 삶을 견딜 수 있게 한 점, 야담가로서 개인적 능력 등은 긍정적으로 평가할 수 있다.

영문 초록

  One of the cultural phenomena in the 1930’s is a trend in Yadam which is a historical story. Its competition was a great success every time. And its magazines were out of print several times. There was Yoon, Baeknam in the center of Yadam which swept a moment in time.
  This looks into Yoon, Baeknam’s Yadam activity. It hasn’t came into the spotlight because it has been criticized as being commercial and popular all the while.
  His Yadam activity is separated into Yadam competition, Yadam broadcast, and Yadam magazine publication. In Yadam competition, hundreds of audience crowded every time. In Yadam broadcast, listeners asked for extending the broadcasting hours. Also, the magazine 『Monthly Yadam』 was an outstanding sales success in the depression of the publishing circles. Like this, he made himself a name as the best Yadam teller at that time. His interesting Yadam gives a laugh and an amusement to the worried people in the gloomy reality. Dramatic and non-stop narration, using the proper language and gesture, attracted the audience.
  Yun Baeknam had made Yadam of amusement focused on the interest. In the late of 1920s, Joseon Yadam history had mainly narrated the modern unauthorized history purposed on the people enlightenment. On the other hand, Yun Baeknam had shown the aspect that he had adapted the former Yadam purposed the interest for the modern style. The reason of the change is because the 1930s was gloomy and uneasy. People were needed to console. It was the result that Yadam was recognized the part of the story. It was intended for unspecified individuals.
  His Yadam has been criticized as being flattery to the people’s feeling with the ordinary emotion without concerning the reality. However, he made people enjoy Yadam which was dominated by the intellectual class. He gave the people a laugh and an amusement in the gloomy reality, so they can put up with the life. He will evaluate the personal ability as a Yadam teller positively.
