영문 초록

  Haeuigooksa, written by Geumgok BakSangyeon in the 17 century, is a Gajeon of a personified laver. This study aims at examining descriptive characteristics and literary significance of Haeuigooksa. Gajeon literature appeared upon the Korean Literature history at the close of Goryo and secured an important place in it. The form of Haeuigooksa bears resemblance to those of other Gajeons, but its substance is remarkably different from them. With his outstanding literary sense and his extensive knowledge about Chinese history, many seaweeds and riverine plants were mentioned in his work and the story was creatively weaved and developed. Haeuigooksa was put in Geumgokgyp, a writing collection by Geumgok BakSangyeon, who was the magistrate of Chogye in the age of King Sookjong but so sick of politics that he resigned his office and wandered all over the country for the rest of his life. He implicated his harsh life in Haeuigooksa. In the descriptive structure, Haeuigooksa is typically following the structure of Gajeon literary works as Beginning (序頭)- Preclue (先系)- Vestige (事蹟)- Ending (終末)- Post-clue (後孫)- Concluding (評決). Especially in Beginning and Pre-clue, physical characteristics and properties of laver represented well as the story developed. In Vestige dignity and faculty of Laver the Son of Heaven, the advent of Haeuigook were described vividly. In Ending and Post-clue it were expressed how laver was used widely and how he felt sorry for Laver"s death. Those descriptive peculiarities made Haeuigooksa a valuable work to have widen a field of Gajeon literature, and his prominence of literary imagination and configuration of characters was reflected in it. In those senses, Haeuigooksa is a meaningful text for a study of Gajeon Literature at the end of Joseon.
