The aim of this study is to clarify the concept of will or volition in works of John Dewey, and to research its educational meanings. Conclusions are as follows: Firstly, the concept of will of Dewey is not general or descriptive but specific or normative. Will is one factor of consciousness which include of knowledge and feeling. Three factors - will, knowledge and feeling - interact dependently one another. Will is united self because it combines subjective feeling and objective knowledge as one self. Will is regulated impulse because it powers some stimulus into activity of self. To Dewey, will is not innate but acquired through systematic training or education. Secondly, Dewey describe the characteristics of will as follows: will has inherent contents, process of development and some functions. The contents of will are composed of many sensuous impulses such as general impulses, special impulses, perceptional impulses, impulses to imitation, ideational impulses and instinctive impulses. Will develops according to some stages such as desire, deliberation, choice and motive. And will has several functions such as physical control, prudential control and moral or emotional control. Thirdly, Dewey's arguments about concept of will contain some important implications of cognitive education, emotional education and moral education. Will in cognitive sphere tries to pull knower toward objectives of perception. Without helping of will, it is impossible for us to know something. Thus, it is necessary to reexamine traditional theory of cognitive learning. In emotional education, will plays an important role to refine and sublimate blind or impulsive feelings. At this point, methods of emotional education should be reexamined again. And furthermore, will plays an important role to form of moral self or good character. On viewing his conception of will, will is not partial or subsidiary factor but essential factor of morality.
