영문 초록

Revolution by Giwon Seo is a historical novel that describes the “Donghak Revolutionary Movement” led by the peasant class in the last Josun Dynasty. This novel generally shows a specific historical phase, where characters of different social classes reveal the conflict. In the boundary among groups with different interests, skeptical humans are lingering. Revolution is a story of outsiders. Characters posited in the boundary of two powerful groups acquire the mediate space that embraces the immense crisis of historical life. Historical truth and fictional truth are presented by the characters' actions and destiny. The main characters, outsiders Hyunju and Panseok, are exceptional beings. They are embodied in the narrative vein of “Gapo Peasantry War.” They are models who internalize historical collective trauma. Revolution is the story of Hyunju and Panseok as a historic subject. Revolution is a story of the Gapo Peasantry War reflected by those two characters. The modern awareness of an individual starts to be awakened, going through dramatic historic incidents. History always searches for development in specific incidents. Hyunju and Panseak destroy their hierarchical bondage in the process of history and regard historic change as their opportunity. Their effort, although feeble, is a test of their destiny to enter the history of the future “Modern.” Revolution explores deep truths, revealing collective trauma and historic memory.
