영문 초록

Shin Seok-Jeong is broadly called as a pastoral poet. This is based on his first collection of poems, 『The Candlelight』, and his second collection of poems,『The Sad Pastoral』 is also generally included in the same category. But the content of 『The Candlelight』 is very different from that of a pastoral, and the content of 『The Sad Pastoral』is rather anti-pastoral. The pastoral scenic beauty of the rural nature is contained in 『The Sad Pastoral』. But this scenic beauty of the nature in『The Sad Pastoral』is not the beauty of the daylight, the present time and the life but the beauty of the silent night, the past and the picture. Most of the poems in 『The Sad Pastoral』describe the life under the rule of Japanese imperialism, and accuse the dark situation of that period, and express the will to get over the dark situation, and design the independent future of the homeland. 『The Sad Pastoral』that was written and published under the rule of Japanese imperialism contains strong resistant consciousness more than any other collection of poems. These poems of resistant characteristic has not been evaluated fairly because Shin Seok-Jeong has been limited as a pastoral poet. Now Shin Seok-Jeong should be re-placed duly in the history of Korean modern poetry.
