Korea has a long history of five thousand years. This presentation is about the kinds, contents and forms of Korean classical plays. There are five types of classical plays, that is, a Gamuhee, a mask play, a pupet play, Pansori, and a Changgeuk, which are formed throughout the long history. The plays were performed as aristocratic arts from B.C.900 to A.D 1700 and from A.D. 1800 they were transformed into common people’s arts. Formal characteristics of Korean classical plays are their combination of song, dance and play. The contents of these plays whose themes are loyalty, faith and filial piety were satires about noblemen and Buddhists. A Gamuhee was performed in the Royal Court, which was expressed a combination of song, dance and play. The theme is wishes for King’s health and long-life and nation’s prosperity. It was given for a king, civil officials and military officials. Large governmental ceremony was held to celebrate a king’s enthronement and birthday, a queen’s birthday, and to welcome envoys from abroad. Mask plays which were formed in the middle of Lee Dynasty had expressed the theme through satire and dance about aristocrats, buddhists, people’s poverty and bitter feelings. Puppet plays which were formed in the later Lee Dynasty had also expressed the theme through satire and music. The theme is satire about aristocrats and politicians, people’s poverty and bitter feelings. Panssori which was formed in the later Lee Dynasty had expressed the theme which is filial piety through songs, dialogues, action and encouragement of audience. Changgeuk which was formed in the later Lee Dynasty. Changgeuk is similar to western opera. Changgeuk is the classical opera of Korean style. It separated from Pansori and developed into a stage play. Therfore Changgeuk has the same themes and contents as Pansori. In conclusion, the classical plays are composite arts in which people’s feelings and customs are included. Korea has had the classical plays that we have never seen in other Asian countries. So this paper has a particular significance on the study of Korean artistic identity. I will explain briefly the contents of the typical Korean classical plays through video. 1) Gamuhee (3/90)minutes. Play formed in the early Lee Dynasty.
