국문 초록

누구나 아는 바와 같이, 지금 학교 현장 교육에 있어서 漢字ㆍ漢文 敎育의 위상은 너무나 현저하게 격하되고 있다. 요컨대 교육과정상의 ‘漢文’敎科는 교육 수용자인 학생들이 그 필요성을 자각하지 않으면 전혀 선택되지 않을 수도 있는 과목으로 전락한 것이다. 여기에다 ‘漢字ㆍ漢文은 어렵고 재미없으며, 쉬운 한글을 두고 굳이 漢字ㆍ漢文을 왜 배워야 하느냐’는 생각을 갖고 있는, 컴퓨터 세대들의 漢文에 대한 부정적 인식 등의 어려움까지 가중되고 있다. 지난 시기에 우리가 이룩했던 知的 活動과 文化的 成就의 거의 대부분 은 漢字ㆍ漢文으로 기록되어 있다. 이러한 견지에서 漢字ㆍ漢文 敎育을 지금처럼 도외시한다면, 우리의 사상이나 정서에서부터 가치관에 이르기까지 연면히 간직되어 온 민족의 정신적 자산 대부분을 放棄하는 결과를 초래 할 것이다. 아울러 국어 어휘의 많은 부분을 차지하고 있는 漢字語의 학습을 통하여 현금의 언어생활에 보탬이 되고, 현실적으로도 여타의 敎科目을 학습하는 데에 많은 보탬이 된다는 사실도 중요하다. 또한 오늘날 지구촌에서 가장 역동적으로 발전하고 있는 지역이 漢字文化圈이라는 점에도 주목해야 한다. 지리적으로 한자문화권에 속해 있는 우리나라가 주변의 한자문화권에서 고립되지 않으려면 그리고 이들과 협력하여 세계 문명의 발전에 기여하고 문화적 동질성을 유지하려면, 중ㆍ고등학교에서의 漢字ㆍ漢文 敎育은 필수불가결한 과제인 것이다. 한자문화권인 한국ㆍ중국ㆍ일본의 공통분모는 바로 漢字ㆍ漢文이기 때문이다. 그럼에도 중ㆍ고등학교 漢字ㆍ漢文 敎育의 현실은 그야말로 참담한 지경에 있으며, 그에 따른 허다한 문제점에 대해서는 이미 그동안 識見있는 이들의 衷情어린 지적과 경고가 있었다. 漢字ㆍ漢文 敎育이 안고 있는 여러 가지 문제점들을 능동적으로 극복하기 위한 방안에는 여러 가지가 있겠다. 이 논문도 이 같은 상황 인식과 문제 의식을 바탕으로 어려운 현실을 타개해 보려는 노력의 일환으로 집필되었는바, 우선 中學校 漢文敎育의 변천 과정과 현황 그리고 향후의 전망에 대해서 나름대로 살펴 보았다. 이러한 검토 과정에서 드러난 中學校 교육 현장의 문제점에 대한 제기를 통해, 한문 교육의 개선을 위한 방향을 설정하는데 일정한 도움이 되기를 기대한다.

영문 초록

This paper was written to study the course of changes in Middle school classical chinese characters' education, the present condition, and the outlook from now on. As everyone knows, the importance of reading and writing classical chinese characters is being downgraded in school education these days. So the subject of classical chinese characters can be ignored if students don't feel the need to study it. In addition, they think, ‘Reading and writing classical chinese characters is far too difficult and not so interesting, so why must we learn classical chinese characters instead of using our own alphabet, Hangeul(한글)’ Hence, there is also the difficulty of negative opinions about it from the younger generation. Most of our intellectual activities and cultural achievement in the old days were written in classical chinese characters. In this point of view, if we ignore the education of classical chinese characters like we are doing now, the result would be that we would have lost most of our national spiritual assets from our thoughts and emotions to even our long-time values. Besides, the learning of classical chinese characters which have a lot of influence on Korean vocabulary is very helpful in verbal understanding and the study of other subjects. Also, these days a greater and more significant cultural use of classical chinese characters is becoming known in the world and must be paid attention to. Our country, geographically located in the classical chinese characters' global area of cultural influence, has to teach the students classical chinese characters so as not to be cut off from this particular cultural area, and instead cooperate with these countries to contribute to the development of world civilization and maintaining the same quality of culture, because it is the common denominator of Korea, China, and Japan. Nevertheless, the education of classical chinese characters and writing is in a miserable state now. We are already aware that this issue makes many problems. There may be many ways to cope actively with these many problems which the education of classical chinese characters and writing offers. This paper is written based on this present-situation and these problems that we sense, and to find a realistic way out of these difficulties. I hope it is helpful in finding a good direction in the improvement of classical chinese characters' education through presenting the particular problems in the field of middle school that were revealed in this course of investigation.
