한국대학생활적응에 대한 외국인 유학생들의 인식유형

국문 초록

본 연구의 목적은 한국에 유학 온 외국인유학생들이 주관적으로 인식하고 있는 대학생활적응의 공통점과 특징을 도출해내어 유형화 하는데 있다. 외국인유학생들의 대학 생활적응은 유학 동기, 문화 감수성, 간문화적 역량, 적응의 관점에서 도출해 볼 수 있는데 본 연구에서 연구 방법으로 Q방법론을 이용하였다. Q표본은 외국인유학생들 심층면담, 기사, 관련문헌을 통해서 최종 33개의 진술문을 완성하였다. P샘플은 24명의 외국인유학생들로 구성되었고 QUANL PC 프로그램으로 주요인을 분석해 유형을 구분하였다. 연구 결과, 외국인유학생들의 인식유형은 6가지로 나타났다. 유형1은 경제적 어려움이 있으나 적극적인 한국문화에 적응하면서 미래에 한국에 정착하고 싶어하는 ‘적극적 적응형’, 유형2는 지리적으로 가까운 한국으로 유학 와서 적극적으로 친구를 사귀는 일을 최우선으로 두는 ‘문화 적응형’이다. 유형3은 공부에 대한 욕구는 많으나 한국어 능력 부족과 학교생활 부적응으로 힘들어하는 ‘학습 부적응 인식형’이었으며, 유형4는 한국에서 취업하고 정착하고자 하나 인간관계에는 미숙한 ‘한국정착 목적형’으로 조사되었다. 유형5는 학교생활, 인간관계, 학업 모두에 적응을 힘들어하고 혼란스러워하는 ‘총체적 불만족형’이며, 유형6은 인간관계가 대학 생활의 목적인데 한국의 대학 문화에는 적응을 힘들어하는 친밀관계를 추구하는 ‘대학문화 부적응형‘이다. 이 연구의 결과는 외국인유학생들의 한국에서의 대학생활 적응에 도움이 되는 방안을 마련하는데 기초자료로 활용되기를 기대하며, 새롭게 제기된 이론적 가설은 후속 연구에 도움이 되기를 기대한다.

영문 초록

This research aims to identify the features of typology of international students perception on their adaptation to college life in Korea. In order to achieve the aim, this research used Q method, and total of 33 Q sample questions were selected from literature review, in-depth interview with international students, and newspaper articles. P sample size was 24 respondents. Their perception was assessed in terms of their purpose of studying abroad, cultural sensitivity, intercultural competency, and adaptation. As a result, valid types of perception were categorized into six groups using QUANL PC program. Type 1 was an ‘active adaptors’ who would aggressively get accustomed to Korean culture and even wished to settle in the future despite financial difficulty. Type 2 was relationship-oriented ‘cultural adaptor’ group of students whose primary goal in Korea was to make friends with the Koreans. Type 3 was ‘conscious underachievers’ who were constantly aware of their low proficiency in Korean and maladjustment to university life. Type 4 was ‘settlement goal-setters’ who were unskilled in forming new relationships but had wishes to settle in Korea in the future. Type 5 was ‘total dissatisfaction’ group who were discontent with their academic achievement, relationship, and life as a whole due to difficulties in adapting to a new life setting. Lastly, type 6 was a ‘university-life-specific complaining’ group of students who perceived making friends as a primary goal in life but failed to adjust to the Korean university culture. This research would contribute to policy implication for universities to help international students to adapt more successfully in Korea. Finally, the newly proposed theoretical hypothesis would be contributable for further research.
