국내거주 외국인 대상 마이크로어그레션의 유형 및 한국청소년들의 인식 연구

국문 초록

본 연구의 목적은 외국인들이 한국사회에서 경험하는 마이크로어그레션(microaggression) 사례를 수집하여 유형화하고, 이를 바탕으로 한국 청소년들의 마이크로어그레션에 대한 인식 조사 및 ‘원포인트개념학습’을 통한 다문화 교육의 가능성을 탐색하는 데에 있다. 이를 위해 외국인 주민 6명을 심층면담하고, 유학생 37명을 대상으로 설문 및 개별면담을 실시하여 총 70문항의 마이크로어그레션 사례를 수집하여 설문을 구성하였다. 그리고 한국 청소년 100명에게 이 설문을 통한 마이크로어그레션 인식조사를 실시한 후, 짧은 동영상을 활용한 원포인트개념학습을 제공하고 다시 동일한 설문 문항에 대한 사후 조사를 실시함으로써 청소년 참여자들의 인식 변화를 살펴보았다. 연구 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 모든 외국인참여자는 한국사회에서 마이크로어그레션을 경험하였고 그 중 마이크로인설트(microinsult) 유형의 비중이 마이크로어설트(microassault)나 마이크로인밸리데이션(microinvalidation)에 비해 특히 높았다. 둘째, 국내거주 외국인과 한국인 청소년 간에 마이크로어그레션에 대한 인식의 차이가 있었으며 특정 사례에서는 큰 차이를 보였다. 셋째, 원포인트개념학습 이후 마이크로어그레션에 대한 청소년들의 인식변화를 확인할 수 있었으며 특히 마이크로어설트와 마이크로인설트 유형에서는 두드러진 인식개선을 보였다. 본 연구는 국내 사례를 수집하여 이를 인식 조사에 활용한 점과 청소년을 대상으로 원포인트개념학습이라는 대안적 다문화 교육의 효과성을 확인하였다는 점에서 큰 의의가 있다.

영문 초록

This study aimed to investigate Korean teenagers’ perceptions of microaggressions against foreign residents in South Korea and to explore the potential of a ‘one-point concept lesson’ in changing their perceptions. The cases of microaggressions were first collected by conducting semi-structured in-depth interviews with 6 foreign residents and questionnaires and group interviews with 37 international students. A total of 70 cases of microaggressions collected were itemized for surveying 100 Korean teenagers’ perceptions of microaggressions. After the survey, the Korean teenagers participated in a one-point concept lesson on microaggression and answered the same questionnaires again. To examine the changes in the students’ perceptions, their responses in pre and post lesson surveys were compared and analyzed. The findings of this study are as follows: First, all foreign participants living in Korea have experienced microaggressions mainly in the type of microinsults. Second, the perceptions of the foreign and Korean teenager participants about the microaggression cases showed considerable gaps, and the gap was wider in some cases. Third, the one-point concept lesson of microaggressions was effective in that the teenagers’ scores for post-lesson surveys increased compared to those for pre-lesson surveys. This study is significant because it collected and utilized the contextualized microaggression cases. Also, it proved the effectiveness of an alternative approach to multicultural education, a one-point concept lesson, for adolescents.
