국문 초록

전통사회에서 먹은 붓과 함께 기록과 표현의 도구로서 중요한 의미를 지닌다. 한국에서는 고대부터 우수한 품질의 종이, 붓, 벼루와 함께 먹을 만들어 사용해 왔다. 특히 조선시대 먹은 尙衣院에 소속된 墨匠에 의해 제작되어 왕의 하사품으로, 다른 한편으로는 중국과 일본 등으로 수출되는 주요 물품 중의 하나였다. 일본과의 관계에서 먹의 교역은 통신사·문위행이 가져가는 예단품, 연례송사와 차왜 등에게 지급되는 회사 및 구청품, 그리고 비정기적인 구무 등 다양한 방식으로 이루어지고 있었다. 이러한 다양한 방식의 교역을 통해, 먹이라는 물품은 조·일 양국의 외교와 교역관계에서 중요한 역할을 수행하며 일본 내에서도 그 쓰임과 가치를 인정받은 것으로 보인다.

영문 초록

In traditional society, writing brush and ink stick(墨) have important meaning as a tool of record and expression. In Korea, ink sticks have been made and used with high-quality paper, brushes since ancient times. In particular, in the Joseon Dynasty, the ink stick was produced by the ink stick-making master craftman(墨匠) belonging to Sanguiwon(尙衣院) and was one of the main goods exported to China and Japan as a king’s gift. In terms of relations with Japan, various transactions were made in various ways, such as tongsinsa(通信使) and munuihaeng(問慰行)’s preliminary products, Tsushima domain’s regular envoys to Joseon(年例送 使), Tsushima domain’s irregular envoys to Joseon(差倭), and Hoesa(回賜) and Gucheong(求請), and irregular gumu trade(求貿). Through these various types of trade, the commodity called ink stick seems to have played an important role in the diplomatic and trade relationship between Joseon and Japan and has been recognized for its use and value in Japan.
