동해 삼화사지출토 불교유물에 대한 고찰

국문 초록

신라하대에 창건된 삼화사는 고려와 조선시대, 일제강점기를 거쳐 오늘날에 이르기까지 수많은 화재와 전란을 겪으며 법등을 이어왔다. 사찰은 원래의 삼화사터와 중대암터를 오가며 여러 차례 중건을 거듭했고, 1977년에는 현재 삼화사가 있는 중대사지 근처로 이전하였다. 그 전까지 삼화사가 있었던 원래의 삼화사지는 그 동안 여러 차례 지표조사와 시굴조사가 이루어졌고 2018년부터 최근까지 4차에 걸친 발굴조사가 진행되어오고 있다. 특히 4차 발굴조사에서 출토된 금동여래입상과 납석제 소탑 6기, 청동존상 및 금속제 장식편 등, 미술사 유물들은 삼화사의 역사를 이해할 수 있는 중요한 단서가 된다. 높이 8.38cm 금동여래입상은 얼굴의 相好와 신체비례, 세부표현, 주조기법에서 신라하대의 다른 금동불입상들과 동일한 특징을 보인다. 소형의 금동불은 이동이 용이하여 출토지와 제작지가 일치하지 않을 수 있다는 점은 감안해야 할 것이나, 조형적인 면에서 신라하대 9세기 중후반으로 편년되는 금동여래입상이 삼화사지에서 출토되었다는 것은 삼화사의 창건시기 뿐 아니라 이 사찰에 전해오는 철조노사나불좌상의 제작시기와 관련해서도 참고할만한 자료라고 생각된다. 삼화사지 탑지에서 출토된 6기의 납석제 소탑은 1979년에 확인된 25기의 납석제 소탑과 함께 석탑 내에 봉안되었던 것으로 추정된다. 이들 납석제 소탑은 삼화사 석탑이 8세기초에 신라에 전해진 『無垢淨光大陀羅尼經』에 의거하여 77기 또는 99기의 소탑을 탑 안에 봉안하는 장엄법식을 따랐음을 알려준다. 동일한 석탑 장엄방식은 億聖寺로 추정되는 양양 선림원지 삼층석탑에서도 보이고 있어 당시 溟州에 속했던 설악산 권역과 두타산 권역의 석탑 장엄방식이 동일했음을 알 수 있다. 삼화사지출토 납석제 소탑은 탑의 정면에 방형의 감실형 공간이 뚫려있는데, 이것은 다른 신라하대 소탑에서는 아직까지 발견되지 않은 표현으로 초층탑신에 방형 감실이 개설된 전탑이나 모전석탑의 형태를 따른 것으로 이해된다. 또한 금속제 존상과 장식편들은 고려후기 13세기에 삼화사 석탑을 중수할 때 봉안했던 금동탑의 부재와 장식물로 추정되며 당시 삼화사가 크게 융성한 사찰이었음을 말해주는 유물이라고 하겠다.

영문 초록

The Samhwasa temple(三和寺) of Donghae(東海市), Gangwon Province, erected during the later half of 9th century of the Unified Silla period, was prosperous during the Goryeo and early Joseon period until it was destroyed during the Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592. Since the 17th century of the later Joseon period, Samhwasa temple was reconstructed and relocated several times when the temple was destroyed either by fire or landslide caused from flood, and the temple was finally moved to its present place in 1977. The temple-site of Samhwasa has been investigated several times and, since 2018, has been excavated four times. During the fourth excavation, Buddhist artifacts such as the gilt-bronze standing Buddha image, six miniature pyrophyllite stupa, and metal images and fragments were unearthed. The gilt-bronze standing Buddha image of the later half of 9th century shows the typical characteristics of Buddha images of the late 9th century, including facial expression, body-proportion, and detail of drapery. Considering small gilt-bronze images could be found where they were not made, it is interesting that the gilt-bronze Buddha image of the later half of the 9th century was unearthed at the temple-site of Samhwasa, where it was established. The six miniature stupas made with pyrophyllite show that they were enshrined inside of the stone stupa, which follows the enshrining method(formula) of Rasmi-vimala-visuddha–Prabha-Dharani(無垢淨光大 陀羅尼經). In this sutra, Buddha explains that it is as meritorious to enshrine 77 or 99 small stupas as it is to build a myriad of stupas. This sutra was first introduced to Unified Silla in the early 8th century and became widespread in the 9th century. Miniature stupas of the Samhwasa temple- site are unique in their shape with a rectangular niche on the surface. Small metal images and fragments were most likely parts of a small metal stupa, which was popular in the late Goryeo period. It is also interesting to note that gilt-gold is found on the surface of these fragments, which demonstrates that the small stupa was gilt-bronze. It is fair to assume that this gilt-bronze stupa(金銅塔) was enshrined inside of the stone stupa that was restored in the 13th century of the late Goryeo period when Samhwasa was very prosperous.
