존 톰슨의 여행을 통해 본 근대 중국의 자연경관 - 양자강 유역을 중심으로 -

국문 초록

본고는 영국 빅토리아 시대 저명한 여행가이자 사진작가인 존 톰슨(John Thomson)의 『중국과 중국인의 사진집(Illustrations of China and Its People: a Series of Two Hundred Photographs, with Letterpress Descriptive of the Places and People Represented , vol.Ⅰ~IV)』에 재현된 중국 양자강 유역의 자연경관을 그의 탐험 여정에 따라 寧波~漢口와 漢口~巫峽의 두 구간으로 구분하여 각각 살펴보았다. 근대 중국의 자연경관에 대한 톰슨의 재현 작업에 관해서는 최근 주목할 만한연구가 이루어졌다. 선행 연구는 톰슨의 사진이 가지고 있는 복잡한 성격을 인정하는 가운데 그 내면에 경제적인 목적 의식이 깊이 투영되어 있음을 밝혀내었다. 본고는 이러한 선행 연구의 분석으로부터 시사 받은 바가 크다. 본고는 선행 연구로부터 시사 받은 부분을 좀 더 구체적으로 계발하여 양자강 유역의 자연경관 사진에 반영되어 있는 그의 시선이 가지고 있는 특징을 규명하고자 한다. 양자강 유역의 자연경관에 대한 톰슨의 시선은 다음과 같은 특징을 가지고 있다. 첫째, 톰슨의 사진과 서사는 미지의 아름다운 자연경관을 추구하는 심미적인특성을 반영하고 있다. 둘째, 양자강 유역의 자연경관에 관한 톰슨의 시선은 대단히 회화적인 특성을 보이고 있다. 셋째, 톰슨의 양자강 유역 탐험은 자본주의적인 동기에서 비롯된 측면이 있기 때문에 그의 사진과 서사에는 자연스럽게 이러한 목적성이 반영되어 있다.

영문 초록

This paper examines the natural landscapes of the Yangtze River basin in Illustrations of China and It’s People : a Series of Two Hundred Photographs, with Letterpress Descriptive of the Places and People Represented , vol.Ⅰ~Ⅳ by John Thomson, a renowned British Victorian traveler and photographer. The Yangtze River basin is divided into two sections, from Ningbo to Hankou and from Hankou to Wuxia, according to Thomson’s exploration journey. A remarkable study has recently been conducted on Thomson’s representation of the natural landscape of modern China. Previous studies recognized Thomson’s complex nature and found that economic sense of purpose was deeply reflected inside. This paper has received great implications from the analysis of these preceding studies. This paper aims to clarify the characteristics of Thomson’s eyes reflected in the natural landscape photographs of the Yangtze River basin by developing the parts suggested by previous studies in more detail. Thomson’s eyes of the natural landscapes of the Yangtze River basin has the following characteristics. First, Thomson’s photos and narratives reflect the aesthetic characteristics of pursuing an unknown beautiful natural landscapes. Second, Thomson’s eyes on the natural landscapes of the Yangtze River basin shows very pictorial characteristics. Third, Thomson’s exploration of the Yangtze River basin naturally reflects this purpose in his photos and narratives because it has aspects derived from capitalist motives.
