국문 초록

격물치지론은 단순히 지식을 배우는 일이 어떻게 가능한가, 지식을 배운 상태는 어떤 상태인가를 설명하는 이론이 아니라, 성즉리를 표방한 신유학의 핵심적 논의에 해당한다. 성즉리는 올바른 삶의 기준은 사회에 존재하는가, 개인에게 존재하는가 하는 논의를 통합하는 신유학의 핵심적 주장이다. 이 통합에 의하면 삶의 기준은 단지 사회에서 부과되는 기준이 아니라, 개인과 사회를 초월하는 형이상학적 기준인 리(理)이다. 그러나 그 理는 이미 결정된 초월적 기준이 아니라 인간이 삶의 모든 국면에서 끊임없는 수양의 과정을 통하여 정립해야 하는 기준이다. 이 기준이 정립가능한 것은 그 理가 곧 인간의 본성이기 때문이다. 격물치지는 그 理를 내 마음의 理(性)로 확립해 가는 과정을 설명한다는 점에서 올바른 삶의 기준을 확립하는 도덕교육이론에 해당한다고 볼 수 있다.

영문 초록

The theory of the investigation of things (ko-wu) and the extention of knowledge (chih-chih) is the core theory of Neo-Confucianism. The theory of ko-wu chih-chih occupies an important position in Chu Hsi s philosophical system. Ko-wu and chih-chih are taken as two different descriptions of the same operation seeking to discover the principles of things. Here, ko-wu represents the point of view of the object of investigation, chih-chih represents the point of view of the knowing subject. In his view, the investigation of things(ko-wu) consists in book-learning, and consequently he emphasizes the importance of book-learning. Of all Neo-Confucian philosophers, he alone emphasized the importance of book-learning to the attainment of the Way. He offered the view the words and the deeds of the sages are preserved in books, and book-learning provides the study of principles with a most logical starting point. Also he justified book-learning on the ground that li is constantly in need of support of knowledge obtained from the study of Confucian-texts. In his view, the reason that man has to learn from books is in order to discover li, but once man has understood li, he will find that li is originally inherent in his own nature. This is the end of the process of ko-wu chih-chih, and the state of the integration of hsing-li(性卽理).
