국문 초록

듀이의 「민주주의와 교육」은 민주사회에서의 교육의 원리를 천명한 고전적 문헌으로 평가받고 있다. 그러나 현대 사회의 민주주의 이념에 입각하여 일상의 실천과 교육적 실천 사이의 구분을 없애버리고, 이론적 교과에 우월적 지위를 부여해 온 교육적 전통을 부정하고자 하는 듀이의 교육이론은 삶과 교육의 가치 기준을 오로지 현재의 실제적 문제해결활동에 두는 경우에만 타당성을 가질 수 있다. 피터즈의 「윤리학과 교육」은 민주주의의 의미를 과거로부터의 정치적 전통에 비추어 해석하고, 이론적 교과의 가치를 인류가 오랜 세월에 걸쳐 발전시켜 온 문명된 삶에 붙박혀 있는 논리적 가정에 의하여 정당화한다는 점에서, 듀이의 교육이론에 대한 대안적 이론을 제시하고 있다. 그러나 피터즈의 이론이 제시하는 대안적 이론의 방향은 일상의 실천과는 구분되는 교육적 실천의 성격, 즉 교육적 실천의 초월적 차원을 명시하지 않는다는 점에서 한계를 가지고 있다. 메타프락시스의 아이디어는 듀이의 교육이론에 대한 대안적 이론으로서 피터즈의 교육이론이 거둔 성과와 미진한 점을 분명히 드러내어 주며, 듀이의 교육이론에 대한 대안적 교육이론의 진정한 완결은 메타프락시스적 성격에 충실한 교육이론, 즉 초월적 기준을 구현하기 위한 실천으로서의 교육적 실천의 성격을 확고히 하는 것에서 찾아진다.

영문 초록

J. Dewey s Democracy and Education has been approved as a classical book on educational principles in a democratic society. His democratic principles of education are focused on abolishing not only the division between the theoretical and the practical in education which reflects discrimination among social classes but also the former s superiority over the latter. But the validity of this view cannot be sustained if we don t think of practical usefulness as the only value of education. R. S. Peters s Ethics and Education provides an alternative approach in its justification of educational values and interpretation of democracy to Dewey s philosophy. According to Peters, democracy should be understood in the light of political tradition such as Englishmen s respect for rational discussion and tolerance, and the intrinsic value of theoretical activities in education can be justified by the presuppositions embedded in our form of civilized life. The idea of metapraxis shows clearly both Peters s contribution to educational studies and the limits of his educational theory. The complete alternative to Dewey s educational theory is a metapractical theory which elucidates the transcendental dimension of educational practice and establishes the unmanifested standard by educational practice itself.
