국문 초록

종종-선조대 문묘종사논의는 모두 조선 성리학의 방향을 결정하는 데에 중요한 계기를 마련한다. 중종대 문묘종사논의는 정몽주를 문묘에 종사함으로써 조선 성리학이 심성을 중심으로 발전할 결정적 계기를 마련하며, 선조대 문묘종사논의는 5현을 문묘에 종사함으로써 심성을 중심으로 재조직된 조선 성리학이 학문적으로 발전할 계기를 마련한다. 양대 문묘종사논의는 단순히 문묘대상자를 결정하는 논의가 아니라, 조선 성리학자들의 한평생의 삶을 좌우하는, 조선 성리학의 성격을 결정하는 논의인 것이다. 그러나 양대 문묘종사논의는 이러한 유사점 이외에 차이점 또한 가지고 있다. 중종대 문묘종사논의가 제도 개혁을 통하여 훌륭한 인간을 만들려는 교육적 조치를 나타낸다면, 선조대 문묘종사논의는 학문 연구를 통하여 훌륭한 인간을 만들려는 교육적 조치를 나타낸다는 것이 그것이다. 양대 문묘종사논의를 이와 같이 해석하고 보면, 제도 개혁을 통하여 훌륭한 인간을 만들려는 교육적 조치와 학문 연구를 통하여 훌륭한 인간을 만들려는 교육적 조치는 각각의 한계로 말미암아, 필연적으로 서로를 요청한다. 온전한 의미에서의 교육이 이루어지기 위해서는 두 가지 교육적 조치의 상호 보완을 필요로 하는 것이다.

영문 초록

This study is designed to interpret the debates surrounding enshrinement of confucian scholars in the Munmyo from an educational viewpoint. In order to do so, I analyze two debates, one of which is about the enshrinement of scholars in the Munmyo during the Jungjong period and the other debate concerns the enshrinement of scholars in the Munmyo during the Seonjo period. These two debates share both similarities and differences. These two debates had special significance for determining the direction of how the Choson dynasty shapes Neo-Confucianism. If, in fact, the Choson dynasty s interpretation of Neo-Confucianism during the Jungjong period were developed neo-confucianism in the light of cultivating the mind by enshrining Jeong Mong-ju(鄭夢周) in the Munmyo, then during the Seonjo period it would be developed theoretically by enshrining five sages (五賢). But there are distinctions between the two. If the debate under the reign of Jungjong were interpreted into an educational measures that the mind can be changed for the better through reforming institutions, the debate under the reign of Seonjo could be interpreted into an educational measures through how studies were done. In this case, due to the flaws of the two educational arrangements, these educational measures needed each other.
