양화사 ‘모두’의 의미 구성에 대하여

국문 초록

이 글은 ‘모두’가 비례적 양화사로 기능하기 위하여 필요한 제약부 명사구의 구조를 살펴보고, 사건 양화의 쓰임새를 보이는 ‘모두’의 특성을 살피는 것이 목적이다. 비례적 양화사를 Q라고 하면, Q(A, B)는 A와 A∩B 모두에 의존하며, 구체적으로 A 속에서 A∩B가 얼마큼을 차지하느냐가 진릿값을 결정한다. A는 A∩B의 상대적 크기를 재기 위한 참조점(Et)으로 작용한다. ‘모두’는 A와 A∩B의 크기가 같다. ‘모두’는 제약부 명사구가 나타내는 집단을 개체들로 개별화한 뒤 다시 개체 합으로 집합화한다. ‘모두’는 개체 합의 무리 중에서 최대 집합을 선택하여 참조점으로 삼는다. ‘모두’의 개별화 양상은 제약부 명사구의 유형에 따라 다르다. 명사구 유형에 따라 집단이 개체들로 개별화할 수도 있고, 개체의 내부 구성원으로 개별화할 수도 있다. ‘모두’의 제약부 명사구는 단수 개체가 될 수도 있다. 단수 개체가 ‘모두’와 결합함으로써 단수 개체를 이루는 부분으로 개별화하고 이 부분들의 합이 전체 집합을 형성한다. ‘모두’는 사건 양화의 용법도 가진다. 이 경우, 사건이 진행됨에 따라 제약부의 명사구로 지시되는 한정된 개체가 영향을 받는다. 만일 한정적인 개체가 사건의 진행에 따라 전체적으로 영향을 받으면 그 사건은 완결된 것으로 해석된다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this article is to examine the structure of the restrictor NP, which is necessary for the ‘modu’ to function as a proportional quantifier, and to examine the characteristics of ‘modu’ which shows the use of event quantification. If Q is a proportional quantifier, Q(A, B) depends on both A and A∩B, and more specifically, how much A∩B occupies in A determines the value. A acts as a reference point (Et) to determine the relative size of A∩B. In the case of ‘modu’, the size of A and A∩B is the same. ‘modu’ individualizes the group into individuals and then aggregates them into an individual sum. ‘modu’ selects the largest set among the set of individuals to be the reference point. The individualization pattern of all differs depending on the type of the restrictor NP. Depending on the type of NP, a group can be individualized into individuals or individualized into internal members of an entity. The restrictor NP of ‘modu’ can be a singular entity. A singular entity is individualized into parts, and the sum of these parts forms a complete set. ‘modu’ has the use of event quantification. In this case, as the event progresses, the limited entity is affected. If a definite entity is totally affected by the progress of the event, the event is interpreted as complete.
