언어의 역설(paradox)과 주자의 독서 인식론

국문 초록

주자 독서이론에 대한 연구를 주제별로 구분하면 여러 가지가 된다. 독서 목적론, 독서 인식론, 독서 방법론, 독서 자세론, 독서 수양론, 독서 병폐론, 독서 단계론 등이 여기에 해당한다. 이들 중 독서 인식론은 선행 연구에서 특별히 다루진 적이 없는 주제이다. 그 이유는 아마도 주자 독서이론에서 독서방법과 독서자세, 독서 단계론과 독서 자세론 등이 무엇보다 중요하고 긴요하게 연구되어야 한다고 연구자들이 보았기 때문인 듯하다. 사실 인식론은 철학의 핵심 학문 분야로서 그 접근이 쉽지는 않다. 그러나 참 된 앎이 무엇이며 그러한 앎은 어떻게 획득 되는가에 대한 인식론적 논의는 모든 논의의 앞자리에 놓여야 한다고 본다. 이러한 점에서 본 연구는 주자의 독서이론에서 그 동안 연구의 주변부로 밀려나 있던 독서 인식론을 주제로 삼아 연구하였다. 연구 결과 주자의 독서 인식론은 생기가 넘치고 운동성을 띠는 도리의 앎을 가능하게 하는 인식 체계라는 것을 확인하였다. 주자의 독서 인식론을 통한 이러한 앎은 ‘언어를 통해 언어를 벗어나는 역설’을 통해 이루어진 것이며, 그러한 역설을 실현하는 핵심 활동이 반복 읽기, 음미하기, 숙독하기다. 주자가 그의 독서 인식론을 통해 ‘운동하는 도리’의 앎을 추구한 것은 성현의 말씀으로 상징되는 전통의 온전한 계승을 위해서이다. 주자가 비록 전통에 대한 비판과 창의적 생성을 염두에 두고 제자들을 가르쳤지만 이는 일부에 지나지 않는다. 전통의 계승이라는 주자의 순결주의가 주자의 독서 인식론을 지배하고 있기 때문이다. 향후 독서 교육에서 주자의 독서 인식론을 수용하고자 한다면 주자의 독서 인식론에 깃든 이러한 순결주의적 자기중심성을 개방성을 통해 극복하는 한에서 의미가 있을 것이라 본다.

영문 초록

There are several types of researches on Zhu Xi s reading theories by the topic, and they include theories on the purposes, epistemology, methods, attitude, training, ills, and stages of reading. Of these, epistemology of reading has not been addressed by previous studies probably because researchers believed that Zhu Xi s theories about the methods, attitudes, and stages of reading were the most important and should accordingly be investigated out of the greatest need. Epistemology is one of the core academic areas in philosophy, and it is not easy to approach it. Epistemological discussions should, however, come before any other discussions, covering what true knowledge is and how one can obtain true knowledge. In this sense, the present study chose epistemology of reading, which had been pushed to the fringe in the research of Zhu Xi s reading theories, as its topic and conducted full research on it. The findings show that Zhu Xi s epistemology of reading presents an awareness system to enable the knowledge of duty filled with vitality and mobility. This kind of knowledge based on Zhu Xi s epistemology of reading is through the paradox of escaping from language via language. Core activities designed to realize the paradox are reading repeatedly, savoring, and reading carefully. Zhu Xi sought after the knowledge of moving duty in his epistemology of reading in order to inherit the tradition represented by sages words fully. He taught his pupils with the criticism of tradition and creative generation on his mind, but it was only part of his teachings. It is because his celibacy of inheriting the tradition dominated his epistemology of reading. If one tries to accept his epistemology of reading, it will be significant as long as he or she overcomes this celibacy-based self-centeredness found in his epistemology of reading through openness.
