국문 초록

퇴계는 수기(修己)로서 경(敬)을 실천한 사상가이며 교육자로서 참된 자아실현을 추구한 사람이다. 퇴계는 제자교육과 더불어 자손들의 교육에 힘썼는데 그가 집안 식구들에 보낸 천편 가까이 되는 편지를 통해서 그 흔적을 찾을 수 있다. 특히 퇴계가 아들과 손자 안도에게 보낸 편지는 조손(祖孫)교육의 모범적인 연구 자료가 되고 있다. 치가(治家)는 치인(治人)에 앞서고 치가에서는 수기로 부모가 모범을 보이는 속에 자녀들을 교육하는 전통가정교육의 원리는 인성교육이 자연스럽게 이루어진다. 전통시대에는 ‘나’라는 개인의 의미보다는 공동체적 자아관이 우선되던 시대이므로, 현대의 교육과는 상이(相異)한 부분이 있을 수 있지만 현대인들의 지나친 개인화와 개별화가 확산되는 속에서 오히려 공동체적 삶이 추구하였던 관계와 인간성 회복에 관한 부분은 되돌아 볼 필요가 있다. 퇴계가(家)의 가학(家學)은 과거와 현재 그리고 미래를 잇는 수직적 공동체 삶과 현재에서 자신과 가족 그리고 타인을 아우르는 수평적 공동체 삶을 가르치는 구심점이 되었다. 퇴계는 이 바탕위에 아들 준과 함께 손자교육에 힘써 단순한 보육과 양육의 기능을 넘어 가계(家系)내의 동반 수학자로서의 길을 걸어가는 격대교육의 진정한 의미를 살린 모범적 사례를 보여주고 있다. 가정교육이란 보통 아이가 유아기부터 학령기에 도달할 때까지 시행된 것을 가장 의미가 있는 것으로 인식한다. 본 연구에서는 퇴계가 아들 준에게 보낸 편지 중 손자 안도가 태어나서 관례를 치르는 15살까지의 단편적으로 실린 기록들을 추출해서 퇴계의 손자교육을 살펴보았다. 퇴계의 나이가 41세부터 55세까지이며 손자가 1세부터 15세까지가 된다. 퇴계의 격대교육은 조부-부모-자녀(손자)의 협력관계로 이루어진 교육이었고, 퇴계가 행한 시기적절한 손자교육은 시대를 뛰어넘어 현대의 유아나 아동교육에 제시하는 시사점이 크다.

영문 초록

Toegye is a deep thinker who practiced the “Respect(敬)” by “Training himself(修己), and an educator who pursued the realization of his true self. Toegye worked hard on the education of his descendants along with the education of his students, which can be seen from almost a thousand letters he left. Toegye s letter to his son and grandson Ando is being studied as a wonderful subject of home education. Since the era of the time was when community consciousness was taken for granted rather than the meaning of the individual, education was different from modern times. However, amid the excessive personalization and individuality of the modern people, Toegye s education on the relationship and the recovery of human nature that the community has pursued needs to be looked back. Toegye s letter became a central point of teaching vertical community life linking the past, present and future and horizontal community life, which encompasses oneself, family and others in the present. Toegye, along with his son Jun, is an exemplary example of the true meaning of the field as a person who studies together, not just as a child care and parenting. It is generally recognized that home education is most meaningful from infancy to school age. In this study, we extracted from the letters Toegye sent to his son Jun, a short history of his grandson Ando being born and married until the age of 15, and examined the Toegye s education on his grandson. This period corresponds to the period of 41 to 55 years of Toegye and his grandson from 1 to 15 years. Toegye s education on his grandson was based on the cooperative relationship of grandparents, parents and children, and Toegye s timely education on his grandson has significant implications for education for infants and children.
