국문 초록

이 논문은 다카하시 도오루(高橋亨)의 󰡔조선유학사(朝鮮儒學史) 강의록󰡕을 중심으로, 그의 퇴계관을 고찰하는 것이 목적이다. 다카하시의 강의록은 전체적으로 대일본제국의 식민지라는 시대성 및 지역성을 전제로 한 조선유학사에 대한 학술적 탐구에 일관하고 있다는 특징을 지니고 있다. 그 가운데 보이는 퇴계에 대한 다카하시의 관심은 절대적이었다고 해도 과언이 아니다. 다카하시 도오루의 퇴계 이해는 다음과 같은 특징을 보이고 있다. 첫째, 퇴계에 의하여 귀납법에서 연역법에로의 학수법(學修法. 학문과 수행) 변화가 있었다고 밝히고 있는 점과, 파사(破邪. 삿됨을 타파함)와 현정(顯正. 올바름을 드러냄)이란 설명틀로 퇴계에 의한 조선 주자학의 정통 완성을 강조한다. 즉 퇴계 학문을 조선주자학의 정통으로 구축함이 다카하시의 조선유학사의 첫째 과제였으며, 퇴계 이전 및 동시대 학자에 대한 서술은 결과적으로 퇴계에 의한 정통주자학 구축과정에 수렴된다. 둘째로, 회재 이언적을 이어 영남학파를 형성한다는 설명은 화담의 개성학파와 함께 주자학 연구의 지역적 전개를 구성하며, 다른 한편, 학문의 성격에 입각한 사공파(事功派. 사회·정치적 문제를 주요 관심사로 삼는 학파), 도학선생(道學先生. 도학의 이론만 중시하여 세상 물정에 어두운 학자 학자)파 및 경제파(經濟派. 세상을 다스리고 백성을 구한다는 학파)의 구분도 제시되고, 이윽고 학리적 특성에 의한 주리파(主理派)와 주기파(主氣派), 그리고 절충파에로 심화 발전된다. 이렇게 조선유학사의 학파적 전개는 다카하시에 의해 처음 그 뜰이 마련되었다. 셋째로, 주자 학설에 충실하여 이를 순화(醇化)시켰다는 퇴계의 학문에 대한 평가이다. 이는 중국에 대한 종속성을 입증하는 사례로 거론되기도 하는 한편, 조선적 특징으로 주목하기도 한다. 퇴계에 의해 본격화되는 주자 학설의 제문제 탐구는 후대 학자에 의해 계속되며, 이 역시 다카하시의 조선유학사 서술의 축을 이루고 있다.

영문 초록

This paper aims to look at Takahashi Toru s Viewpoint on Toegye, focusing on his lecture note of the History of Joseon Confucianism. Takahashi s lecture notes are generally consistent with his academic quest for the history of Korean Confucianism under the premise of the Japanese colonial era and regionalism. It is no exaggeration to say that Takahashi s interest in Toegye was absolute. Takahashi Toru s understanding Toegye has the following characteristics. Firstly, he exposes that there was the change from induction to deduction, the change in learning and performance(學修法) by Toegye. And he emphasizes the orthodox completion of Joseon Confucianism by Toegye as a framework of Pasa(破邪) and Hyunjeong(顯正). In other words, the building of Toegye’s study as the orthodoxy of Joseon Neo-confucianism was the first task in Takahashi s history of Joseon Confucianism, and as a result the descriptions of scholars before and after Toegye were collected in the process of building orthodox Neo-confucianism by Toegye. Secondly, the explanation, which forms Yeungnam School follows Hoeje Lee Eon-jeok, constitutes the regional development of the study of Neo-confucianism along with the Hwadam s Kaeseong School(事功派), while the distinction between the School of SaGong, the School of Taoist Teacher(道學先生), the School of Kyeongje(經濟派) based on the academic characteristics are presented. Soon, it develops into the school of Zuri(主理派), and the the school of Zuki(主氣派), and ultimately the school of Compromise. Such an academic development of Joseon Confucianism history was first established by Takahashi. Thirdly, it is an evaluation of Toegye s study that faithfully conveys the theory of Chu Hsi and thus succeeded in purifying(醇化) it. This is sometimes cited as an example of proving Joseon s dependence on China, and is also noted as a characteristic of Joseon Confucianism. The quest for the subject matters of the theory of Chu Hsi, which are launched by Toegye, is continued by a later scholar, and this is also an axis of Takahashi s description of the history of Joseon Confucianism.
