미학자의 미술교육사상에의 기여: 허버트 리드와 토머스 먼로의 ‘미술교육을 통한 국제이해’

국문 초록

본 논문은 20세기 후반의 영미미학을 대표하는 허버트 리드와 토머스 먼로 두 사람의 미학자가 미술교육사상의 정립에 기여 한 바에 관하여 고찰하려는 것이다. 특히 미술교육과 국제적 이해의 관련성에 대한 그들의 사상을 조명하고, 두 사람의 사상 이 갖는 상이함에 관해 살펴보고자 한다. 리드와 먼로는 모두 InSEA의 설립에 깊이 관여하고 있다. 그들의 사상은 이러한 활동을 통하여 제2차 세계대전 이후 예술교육과 결부되는 국제적 이해라고 하는 이념의 기반을 형성하고 있다. 본 논문에서는 우선 InSEA의 설립과정과 관련하여 유네스코의 기초자료를 바탕으로 하여 그 경위를 고찰하는 가운데, 두 사람의 공헌에 관해 정리한다. 이어 리드의 유네스코에 대한 비판을 실마리로 삼아 그가 이상으로 삼았던 국제이해에 대한 미술의 공헌이라는 사상에 관하여 조명한다. 그리고 먼로의 미술교육과 국제이해에 관한 사상을 그의 미술교육 논집에 재 수록된 당시의 관련 논문을 정독함으로써 해명한다. 나아가 양자의 견해가 드러내는 상이함에 관하여 비교 검토할 것이다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this paper is to clarify the contributions of Herbert Read and Thomas Munro, who were the representatives of English and American aesthetician in the late 20th century, to the thoughts of art education. Especially, I will illuminate their thoughts on the relationship between art education and international understanding, and explain the difference of their viewpoints. They were deeply involved with the establishment of InSEA. Their thoughts set a very solid foundation to build the idea of international understanding combined with art education since World War Ⅱ. In this paper, I will show their roles in art education by exploring the materials of UNESCO on the process of the establishment of InSEA. And then, I will consider Herbert Read s contribution to the international understanding through art which was generated from his criticism on the policy of UNESCO, and at once Thomas Munro s opinion of the connection of art education and international understanding by reading his collected papers on art education. Further, I will explore and analyze comparatively the difference of their arguments.
