종이책과 스크린 읽기 논쟁 고찰 - 문자와 읽기의 역사를 중심으로

국문 초록

본 연구는 문자와 읽기의 역사를 고찰하여, 독서 수행 능력이 독서 매체보다 더 중요함을 밝히고자 했다. 종이책이 스크린보다 읽기 능력과 효과에 유리하다는 관점이 있으나, 그러한 주장은 아직은 제한적이고 부분적인 증거만 존재할 뿐이다. 종이책 읽기의 수월성이 인지과학과 뇌신경과학 분과에서 과학적으로 증명된 적은 없다. 종이책 읽기 수월성은 독서의 진정성이 만든 신화화라는 의문이 제기된다. 그러한 의문을 바탕으로 문자와 읽기의 역사를 고찰해 본 결과, 문자는 추상성과 효율성을 추구하는 쪽으로 발달해 왔다. 그림문자, 표의문자, 표음문자로 이어지는 문자의 변천은 정보를 더 쉽게 많이 만들 수 있는 쪽으로 발달해 왔다. 또한 읽기도 휴대성과 복제를 추구하는 쪽으로 발달해 왔다. 두루마리에서 코덱스로, 필사에서 금속활자 인쇄술로 책의 형식이 바뀌면서 지식의 대중화와 다양화가 활성화됐다. 결국 문자와 독서의 역사는 정보와 지식을 더 쉽고 효율적으로 생산하고 활용하는 쪽으로 전개되었다. 현재 전자매체와 스크린 읽기가 등장한 것도 문자와 독서의 역사가 전개되는 양상의 일종이다. 따라서 종이책과 스크린 읽기를 서로 모순된 읽기로 볼 게 아니라, 상황에 맞는 다양한 독서방식으로 받아들여야 한다. 종이책과 스크린 읽기의 수월성 논쟁은 더 이상 무의미하며, 상황과 목적에 맞는 다양한 읽기 능력과 자세를 수행하는 데에 더 주목해야 한다.

영문 초록

This study examines the history of letters and reading to highlight that reading proficiency is more critical than the medium through which reading occurs. While some argue that paper books are superior to screens in terms of reading ability and effectiveness, such claims are supported only by limited and partial evidence. Instead, the perceived superiority of paper book reading might be a myth shaped by the authenticity traditionally associated with it. An exploration of the history of letters and reading reveals that letters systems have evolved toward greater abstraction and efficiency. From pictographs to ideograms and phonograms, letters systems have developed to enable easier and more abundant information production. Similarly, reading practices have evolved toward increased portability and replicability. the history of letters and reading demonstrates a consistent trend toward the more efficient production and utilization of information and knowledge. The advent of digital media and screen reading is merely a continuation of this historical trajectory. Consequently, paper books and screen reading should not be viewed as opposing forms of reading but as complementary modes suited to different contexts and purposes. The debate over the superiority of paper books versus screen reading has become increasingly irrelevant; instead, the focus should shift to cultivating diverse reading skills and attitudes that align with varying situations and objectives.
