이효석 소설에 나타난 聽感覺의 에피파니 연구 - 제임스 조이스 문학과의 연관성을 중심으로

국문 초록

1930년대 한국 문단에서 제임스 조이스는 대체로 ‘심리주의 소설’의 선구자이자 ‘心理的 리얼리즘’을 시도한 대표적인 작가로 논의되었다. 1920년대 말부터 소개되기 시작한 제임스 조이스는 1930년대 들어 집중적으로 번역되면서 모더니즘 문인들을 중심으로 적극적으로 수용되었다. 한국 문학 장 안에서 심리주의 문학과 ‘심리적 리얼리즘’은 ‘카프의 사회주의적 리얼리즘과 대립하는 부르주아 문학의 문학적 수법’으로 이해되었다. 모더니즘 문학의 새로운 창작 방법론으로 제시된 ‘심리적 리얼리즘’은 당시 한국 문단에서 논의되었던 리얼리즘의 한 계열이자 모더니즘 문학을 지칭하는 용어로 폭넓게 사용되었다. 이효석은 리얼리즘의 문학이 현실적 객관파와 심리적 해부파로 분립되어 발전하였다고 보면서 객관적 리얼리즘보다 심리적 리얼리즘을 더 현대적인 문학적 경향으로 평가하였다. 이효석은 1930년대 모더니즘 문인들이 적극적으로 수용한 제임스 조이스와 그의 문학적 경향을 긍정적으로 인식하는 태도를 보인다. 이에 본고는 이효석 소설에 나타난 심리주의적 경향과 제임스 조이스의 수용 양상을 ‘음악’을 매개로 한 심리적 효과와 조이스의 문학적 기법인 ‘에피파니(epiphany)’의 양상을 중심으로 탐구하였다. 제임스 조이스의 작품에서 음악은 감정을 표현하거나 불러일으키는 것으로 기능하며, 언어 이상의 의미가 내포되어 있는 은유적 경험으로 의미화된다. 이효석의 소설은 음악을 통해 감정의 격정을 표현하면서 그러한 정서를 서사에 끌어들이는 양상을 보인다. 또한 음악을 통한 현저한 깨달음과 자각이 이루어지는 ‘聽感覺의 에피파니’가 나타나는 특징을 보인다. 이효석과 제임스 조이스의 소설에서 ‘음악’은 극적 감흥을 고양시키고 서사를 추동하는 역할을 하며, 정신적인 현현(顯現)을 촉발하는 기제가 되는 것으로 평가할 수 있다.

영문 초록

In the context of 1930s Korean literature, James Joyce was recognized as a pioneer of the “psychological novel” and a prominent figure in advancing “psychological realism.” His works, introduced to Korean audiences in the late 1920s and extensively translated in the 1930s, were actively embraced by modernist writers. Within Korean literary discourse, psychological realism was viewed as a literary method of bourgeois literature, positioned in contrast to Kafka's socialist realism. This methodology, celebrated as a new creative approach for modernist literature, became a prominent framework for understanding modernist and realist works in Korean literary circles of the time. Lee Hyo-seok perceived psychological realism as a more modern literary trend compared to objective realism, arguing that realism had bifurcated into an objective realist school and a psychological anatomizing school. His positive reception of James Joyce and his literary techniques reflects the broader embrace of Joyce’s influence among Korean modernist writers. This paper examines the psychological tendencies in Lee Hyo-seok's novels in connection with Joyce's works, with particular attention to the psychological effects of “music” and Joyce's technique of “epiphany.” In Joyce’s literature, music operates as an evocative and emotional force, serving as a metaphorical experience that transcends linguistic expression. Similarly, Lee Hyo-seok’s novels utilize music to intensify emotional depth, integrating it into the narrative to evoke powerful psychological responses. A distinctive feature of Lee’s works is the “epiphany of hearing and sensation,” moments of profound realization and awareness catalyzed by music. In the works of both Lee and Joyce, music emerges as a mechanism that heightens dramatic emotion, advances narrative development, and facilitates spiritual and emotional revelation. By exploring the role of music and its psychological resonance in Lee Hyo-seok's literature, this study highlights the interplay between auditory sensations and emotional expression, situating these elements within the framework of psychological realism. Furthermore, it underscores the shared literary mechanisms employed by Lee and Joyce, illuminating how music operates as a conduit for narrative and psychological transformation in their respective works
