『신정심상소학』(1896) 교과 제재의 특성 연구 - 일본의 『심상소학독본』(1887)과의 비교를 중심으로

국문 초록

본고는 조선의 학부에서 편찬한 『신정심상소학』(1896)과 그 저본으로 알려진 일본의 『심상소학독본)』(1887)를 비교, 고찰하여 『신정심상소학』의 교과 제재의 특성을 밝히는 것에 그 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 두 교과서를 대상으로 수신, 이과, 역사, 지리, 기타로 교과의 제재를 분류한 뒤, 유사 단원을 비교 분석하여, 『신정심상소학』이 학습자에게 전하고자 했던 근대의 지식과 윤리, 국가관과 세계관을 살펴보고자 했다. 그 결과는 다음과 같다. 『신정심상소학』의 총 97개 단원 중, 44단원이 유사하며, 이과 제재에 대한 참고가 가장 많았다. 특히 이과 제재의 경우 문장을 그대로 옮긴 것도 많아 일본을 통한 서구 문물 도입에 적극적이었음을 알 수 있다. 또, 기존의 선행연구에서 유사 단원으로 분류된 권1 제2과 ‘勉勵’, 제3과 ‘蟻’, 제19과 ‘正直ᄒᆞᆫ兒孩’, 권2 제13과 ‘익킬習이란字라’는 유사성이 없음을 밝혔다. 『신정심상소학』은 교과 제재를 통해 근대적 지식의 습득, 근대적 사고와 과학 교육의 중요성, 국가 정체성 형성과 국가 방위, 바른 인재의 양성이 강조되었다. 『신정심상소학』은 단순한 문자, 문해 교육을 넘어 국민 국가 형성의 핵심적 역할을 담당한 사회적, 정치적 기재였다고 평가할 수 있다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to compare and analyze Sinjeong Simsang Sohak(1896) compiled by the Department of Joseon and Jinjou Shougaku Tokuhon(1887) of Japan, known as its original, to reveal the characteristics of Sinjeong Simsang Sohak by subject. To this end, the two textbooks were categorized into ethics, science, history, geography, and other subjects, and similar units were compared and analyzed to examine modern knowledge, ethics, national views, and worldviews that Sinjeong Simsang Sohak wanted to convey to learners. The results are as follows. Of the 97 units in Sinjeong Simsang Sohak, 44 units were similar units, and reference to scientific content was the most common. In particular, in the case of science sanctions, sentences were often adopted verbatim, indicating an active acceptance of Western culture. Sinjeong Simsang Sohak emphasized the acquisition of modern knowledge through text learning, the importance of modern thinking and science education, the formation of national identity and national defense awareness, and the cultivation of well-rounded individuals through subject-specific content. Sinjeong Simsang Sohak can be evaluated as a social and political instrument that played a key role in the formation of a nation-state, played a role in cultivating modern thinking, internalizing practical rationalism, promoting historical and spatial thinking, and promoting patriotism beyond simple literacy education.
