투키디데스의 역사 내러티브 : 현대 역사학에서의 투키디데스

국문 초록

투키디데스는 19세기 독일의 직업적 역사가들에 의해 ‘과학적 역사학의아버지’라는 별명을 갖게 되었다. 하지만 ‘과학적’의 근거가 불충분할 뿐만 아니라, 그의 역사서술이 본질적으로 기원전 5세기 아테네의 쇠락을 그리는 서사라는 점에 주목하여 20세기부터는 그의 역사서술을 내러티브 자체로 보는시각이 등장했다. 이 글은 그의 역사에서 발견되는 내러티브적 특성들을확인하되 그의 저작을 ‘역사’라고 부르는 이유가 무엇인지, 다시 말해 투키디데스의 내러티브에 드러난 ‘역사’만의 고유한 특징이 무엇인지 사례 연구의일환으로써 확인하고자 한다. 『역사』 역시 그의 기억을 바탕으로 재구성한것이라는 데에 주안점을 두는 한편 역사가의 시간 의식의 발현 양상을 서사적 시간, 역사서술적 시간, 역사적 시간으로 나누어 분석한다. 나아가 역사전체를 관통하는 법칙인 휘브리스(오만)-네메시스(신의 징벌)이 우연(tyche) 과 중첩된 방식에 주목하여, 역사 내러티브에서의 우연과 개연성의 문제를다룬다. 마지막으로 내러티브란 결국 역사가와 독자의 소통 방식에 따라 형성된다는 점에서 역사가의 설명 방식과 그로 인해 양산된 능동적 독자 군상을 확인한다. 현대의 역사학에서는 역사가 문학인지 과학인지의 오래된 논쟁을 넘어 역사가 가진 서사성과 내러티브를 인정하되 역사 내러티브만의 고유성을 찾아내는 작업이 요구되며, 동시에 역사를 어떻게 읽을 것인지에 대한논의로의 확장의 필요성을 제기하고자 한다.

영문 초록

Thucydides was nicknamed the “father of scientific historiography” by professional historians in 19th century Germany. However, in the 20th century, a perspective emerged that emphasized that his History as primarily a narrative of the decline of Athens in the fifth century BC. This article aims to identify the narrative elements present in his History, using it as case study to question why his work is classified as history. In other words, the main theme of this paper is to explore the unique characteristics of Thucydides' “historical” narrative. Firstly, focusing on the fact that History is also a reconstruction based on his memories, identifying the manifestations of the historian's temporal consciousness as narrative time, historical narrative time, and historical time. Additionally, the concept of tyche(chance) and eikos (Probablity) in historical narratives, examining how hybris (arrogance) and nemesis (divine punishment) intersect with tyche(chance), a principle that permeates entirety of History. Finally, by analysing the historian's mode of explanation and the active audience it engages, recognizing that narrative is ultimately shaped by the interaction between historian and readers. Moving forward, contemporary historiography must transcent the longstanding debate over whether history is literature or science. It should acknowledge the narrative nature of history while also seeking to uncover the uniqueness of “historical” narratives and expanding the discussion to include how history should be read.
