국문 초록

남구만은 개국공신으로 영의정을 역임했던 재(在)의 10세손으로, 아버지는현령 일성, 어머니는 충주 누암이 세거지였던 안동 권박의 딸이다. 그는 관료생활 초기 언관으로 활동하면서 원칙에 입각한 강경한 언론으로 극간지사(極 諫之士)라는 평을 받았다. 퇴임할 때까지 여러 차례 유배와 복직을 반복했던그는, 영의정 재임 시에도 언로의 확보와 원만한 국정 운영을 위해 적극 노력하였다. 평소에 원칙주의적 입장을 견지했던 만큼, 무모한 정책 추진보다는 현실적인 면을 중시했다. 국론을 분열시켰던 북벌에 대해 특별한 언급이 없었던 것은 불가능성에 집착하기보다, 현실적인 입장이 강했던 자세와 무관하지 않다. 북경 지방 경비 강화를 통한 국방 강화에 매진하였고, 울릉도와 관련된 문제에서는 대일 강경론을 주장하였다. 현실 정치에서는 관료들 간의 대립과 갈등으로 국가의 안위와 성패가 갈리는 현실을 우려하면서, 당파 간 갈등과 대립에 대해서는 비판적인 입장이 강했다. 약천은 뛰어난 문장력으로 책문(Chaekmoon)･반교문(Bangyo)･묘지명(Memorial Inscription) 등을 많이 썼으며, 국내외 기행문과 우리 역사에 대한 고증도 많이 남겼다. 서화에도 출중했으며, 그가 지은 시조 ‘동창이 밝았느냐’가 청구영언(Cheongguyoungeon)에 전하고 있다.

영문 초록

Nam Guman, the 10th descendant of Nam Jae who served as Chief State Councilor as a meritorious subject during the founding of the Joseon Dynasty, was born to County Magistrate Ilsung and the daughter of Kwon Bak of Andong, whose family w as o riginally f rom Nuam, Chungj u. A s a young official, he served as a remonstrance official, earning the reputation of ‘a stern admonisher (極諫之士)’ for his steadfast and principled remonstrations. Throughout his career, he faced multiple exiles and reinstatements, yet even during his time as Chief State Councilor, he remained committed to ensuring freedom of speech and facilitating smooth governance. Given his principled stance, Nam Guman prioritized practical matters over reckless policy implementation. His lack of specific advocacy for the Northern Expedition, which had divided the nation, can be attributed to his practicality rather than an avoidance of difficult issues. He focused on strengthening national defense by reinforcing the northern border region and advocated a tough stance against Japan regarding Ulleungdo. Concerned about the potential for factional strife to jeopardize national security, he was critical of the divisions and conflicts among officials. A man of exceptional literary talent, Yakcheon authored numerous Chaekmoon, Bangyo and Memorial Inscription, along with travelogues and historical analyses. He was also a skilled calligrapher and composed the Sijo ‘Dongchangi Balgatneunya (Is the sun up yet on the east sky?),’ which is included in the anthology Cheongguyoungeon.
