국문 초록

이 글에서는 그간 신라의 삼국통일과 관련된 논의가 과연 절대다수의 하층민에게 얼마만큼 초점이 맞추어졌는가, 오늘날 어떠한 시대정신을 담아 이 논의를 이어가야 하는가 하는 점에 집중하여 7세기 신라의 전쟁과 통일을 곱씹어 보았다. 신라의 통일은 오랜 세월 지속된 정복전쟁･영토전쟁이 종식되고 ‘평화시대’를 열었다는 측면에서 긍정적 의미를 부여해야 한다. 7세기 후반 신라 사람들은 지배층부터 하층민까지 그러한 통일의 결과와 시대의 변화를 體認하였다. 통일은 상대를 멸하여 흡수·병합하고 영토를 넓힌다는 것보다, 인민이 계속해서 전쟁을 부담해야 하는 불합리함을 종식하고 군사적･경제적 안정을 늘리는 수단이자 결과였다. 과거 하나의 국가에서 역사를 공유한 같은 민족이라는 정신적･문화적 자산과 우호적 외교에 충실하며 평화를 추구하는 인류 보편의 가치는 ‘통일’의 이유이자 통일의 방향성을 설정하는 요체가 되어야 함을 우리의 과거를 통해 알 수 있다.

영문 초록

This article re-evaluates the meaning of Silla's war and unification in the 7th century, focusing on how much of the discussion on Silla's unification of the three kingdoms has focused on the absolute majority of the common people, and what kind of zeitgeist should be reflected in this discussion today. The unification of Silla should be given a positive meaning in that it ended the long-lasting conquest and territorial wars and opened an “era of peace.” In the latter half of the 7th century, the people of Silla, from the ruling class to the lower classes, felt the changes resulting from unification. Unification was not about destroying and absorbing other countries to expand territory, but rather a means and result of ending the irrationality of the people having to continue to bear the burden of war and bringing about military and economic stability. The spiritual and cultural commonalities of a people who belonged to one country in the past and shared history, and the universal human value of pursuing peace through friendly diplomacy should be the reason for ‘unification’ and the key to setting the direction of unification, both in the past and now.
