국문 초록

본 연구는 키케로의 『국가론(De Re Publica)』과 리비우스의 『로마사(Ab Urbe Condita)』에 드러난 로마의 두 번째 왕 누마 폼필리우스 묘사를 분석하여, 공화정 후기와 초기 프린키파투스라는 각기 다른 시대적 맥락이 그들의 서술에 미친 영향을 고찰한다. 키케로는 누마가 법과 종교를 통해 로마의 혼합정체 발전에 기여하고 평화를 유지했다는 점을 강조하면서도, 그의 업적에 대한 그리스의 영향을 부정했다. 반면, 리비우스는 로물루스의 전쟁과 누마폼필리우스의 평화가 상보적으로 작용하여 로마가 강성했다고 보았다. 특히 키케로의 저술에 부재하지만 리비우스의 저술에서 부각된 ‘경건한 누마(pius Numa)’의 이미지는 아우구스투스 치세에 ‘경건(pietas)’이라는 덕목의 중요성이 증대되었음을 시사한다. 경건한 대사제이자 평화의 수호자로 기억되기를 원한 아우구스투스에게 ‘평화와 경건의 왕’ 누마 폼필리우스는 모범사례(exemplum)로서 더욱 큰 가치를 지니게 되었을 것으로 보인다.

영문 초록

This study analyzes the distinctive portrayals of Numa Pompilius in Cicero's De Re Publica and Livy's Ab Urbe Condita, focusing on how their respective historical contexts shaped these narratives. Cicero emphasizes Numa's contribution to the development of Rome’s mixed constitution and his role in maintaining peace through juridical and religious institutions, while rejecting claims of Greek influence on his achievements. Livy, in contrast, presents Numa's peaceful reign as complementary to Romulus's martial leadership, suggesting that their combined qualities were pivotal to Rome's strength and prosperity. The image of pius Numa, absent in Cicero's account but central to Livy's portrayal, underscores the augmented importance of pietas in the Augustan age. Numa's embodiment of peace and piety likely gained renewed significance as an exemplum under Augustus, who sought to establish his own legacy as a pious pontifex maximus and perpetuator of pax Augusta.
