국문 초록

중세 이슬람 학자들은 지구중심 천동설을 고수하면서 훗날 유럽의 천문학 혁신까지 이어지는 정교한 행성운행 기하학을 제시했다. 다만 기독교 유럽의 신학적 우주론처럼 이슬람 천문학도 완전한 원 궤도운동을 신이 창조한 천상질서의 증거로 보는 종교적 지식체계에 매여 있었다. 고대 그리스 지적 유산은 비잔틴을 거쳐 시리아어와 페르시아어로 전해졌고 이슬람의 발흥 이후에는 추가로 아랍어로 번역되었다. 이 과정에서 재해석된 고대문헌과 추가된 최신지식은 이베리아 알안달루스와 이탈리아 남부를 통해 라틴어 번역본으로 유럽에 전해졌고, 1453년 비잔틴 몰락 후에는 아랍어에서 그리스어로 번역된 천문지식이 르네상스 시기 유럽에 전해져 코페르니쿠스에게 직·간접 영향을 주었다. 코페르니쿠스는 『천구의 회전에 관하여』(1543)에서 이슬람 천문학자 5명(알바타니, 알자르칼리, 이븐쿠라, 이븐루시드, 알비트루지)을 직접 언급했고, 이름을 명시하지 않지만 알투시, 알우르디, 알샤티르처럼 명백한 영향을 준 인물들의 천문모델도 참고한다. 특히 『회전』 제3권은 이슬람 학자들의 행성 기하학을 집중적으로 다룬다. 그러므로 코페르니쿠스 천문학은 독창적인 것이 아니라 프톨레마이오스와 이슬람 학자들의 어깨 위에서 탐구한 결과이다. 그는 『소논평 Commentariolus』(1514)에서 이미 간단한 태양중심 모델을 제시했지만, 30년 후 『회전』에서 원궤도상 부등속 행성운동 문제 해소를 위해 도입한 소주전원 수가 오히려 늘어나 더 복잡해지고 말았다. 이 난해함은 케플러의 타원궤도 발견으로 주전원의 필요성이 사라짐으로써 비로소 해결된다.

영문 초록

Medieval Islamic scholars, while adhering to the geocentric Ptolemaic model, developed sophisticated planetary motion geometries that eventually contributed to the astronomical innovations of early modern Europe. However, like the theological cosmology of Christian Europe, Islamic astronomy was also deeply intertwined with a religious epistemology that regarded perfect circular orbits as evidence of a divine celestial order. The intellectual heritage of ancient Greece, transmitted through Byzantium, was translated into Syriac and Persian and, following the rise of Islam, further into Arabic. During this process, the reinterpretation of ancient texts and the integration of contemporary knowledge were transmitted to Europe through Latin translations from al-Andalus in Iberia and southern Italy. After the fall of Byzantium in 1453, astronomical knowledge translated from Arabic into Greek found its way to Renaissance Europe, exerting both direct and indirect influence on Nicolaus Copernicus. In his De revolutionibus (1543), Copernicus explicitly referenced five Islamic astronomers—al-Battani, al-Zarqālī, Ibn Qura, Ibn Rushd, and al-Bitruji—while also drawing upon the models of figures like al-Tūsī, al-‘Urḍī, and al-Shāṭir, whose influence, though unmentioned by name, is evident in his work. Particularly, Book III of De revolutionibus is dedicated to the geometric models of planetary motion developed by Islamic scholars. Thus, Copernican astronomy was not an entirely original endeavor but rather the culmination of investigations that stood on the shoulders of Ptolemy and medieval Islamic scholars. Although Copernicus introduced a simple heliocentric model in his Commentariolus (1514), his later De revolutionibus of 1543 became more complex, requiring a greater number of epicycles to address the problem of non-uniform planetary motion along circular orbits. This complexity was ultimately resolved by Johannes Kepler’s discovery of elliptical orbits, which eliminated the necessity of epicycles.
