국문 초록

오늘날 ‘아빌라의 성녀’로 알려진 산타 테레사는 반동 종교개혁의 기치가 한창 고양되던 16세기 중반에 에스파냐 전역을 무대 삼아 활동했던 인물로서 맨발의 가르멜 회라는 개혁 수도회를 개척하였고 카스티야 전역과 안달루시아에 17개의 수도원들을 설립하는 행적을 보여주었다. 그러나 그녀가 세간의 이목을 받게 한 주요 사건 중 하나는 종교재판소 소송에 연루된 것으로서 이는 카스티야 지방을 강타했던 알룸브라도스와의 유사성이 지속적으로 거론되었기 때문이다. 한편 그녀를 둘러싼 소송은 콘베르소스에 대한 종교재판소의 박해라는 전형적인 프레임과는 달리 루터의 종교개혁 전후 유럽 내 거세어진 교리 논쟁과 사회적인 긴장의 여파가 에스파냐 지식인들 사이에 경직성을 가중시키고 개신교와 유사한 신앙 형태에 대해 먼저 의혹과 감시, 배제의 시선으로 처리되고 단죄되었다고 보는 것이 더 타당할 것이다. 즉 종교재판소라는 거대 권력기관에 의해 일방적으로 박해받는 양상으로 전개되었다기보다는 오히려 특정 직업군의 종사자들이 고발하고 역으로 중앙의 종교재판소를 압박하는 방식으로 전개되었던 것이다. 이는 트렌트공의회 이후 공고화된 집단 신앙의 관행과 상이한 신앙 형태에 대한 거부감의 반영이라고 볼 수 있다.

영문 초록

Santa Teresa, known today as the Saint of Avila, was active throughout Spain in the mid-16th century when the banner of the reactionary Reformation was in full swing. She pioneered a reform monastic order called the Order of the Barefoot Carmen and founded 17 monasteries throughout Castile and Andalusia. It showed the history of its establishment. However, one of the major events that brought her to the public eye was her involvement in the Inquisition case, which was constantly brought up because of her similarity to the Alumbrados who had taken the Castile region by storm. Meanwhile, the lawsuit surrounding her, unlike the typical frame of the Inquisition’s persecution of conversos, was the aftermath of intensifying doctrinal debates and social tensions in Europe before and after Luther’s Reformation, which aggravated rigidity among Spanish intellectuals and led to a movement similar to Protestantism. It would be more appropriate to see that the form of faith was first treated and condemned with suspicion, surveillance, and exclusion. In other words, rather than developing in a manner in which they were unilaterally persecuted by a large power institution called the Inquisition, it developed in a way in which workers in specific occupations reported and conversely put pressure on the central Inquisition. This can be seen as a reflection of the practice of collective faith that was solidified after the Council of Trent and the rejection of forms of faith that are different.
