프랑스의 그랑 카메오는 로마 초기 제정 시대의 율리우스-클라우디우스 황실의 권력 승계와 로마 제국의 안정 및 번영을 표현한 대표적 부조물이다. 중부 도상판은 지상의 세계로, 티베리우스 황제와 리비아를 중심으로 황실의 권위와 계승을 강조하며, 가이우스(칼리굴라), 게르마니쿠스, 대 아그리피나 등이 황실의 역할과 정당성을 상징한다. 상부 도상판은 천상의 세계로, 율리우스 카이사르와 아우구스투스가 정치적 유산과 신성성을 드러내며, 알렉산드로스 대왕, 쿠피드, 페가수스 등이 이상적 통치와 황실의 영광을 상징한다. 하부 도상판은 이민족 세계로, 정복된 게르마니아 부족을 묘사하며 로마의 군사적 승리와 통합을 표현한다. 전체적으로 팍스 로마나와 황실의 권위를 시각적으로 구현한 작품으로 평가된다.

영문 초록

The Grand Cameo of France is a representative relief from the early Roman Imperial period that visually depicts the power succession of the Julio-Claudian dynasty and the stability and prosperity of the Roman Empire. The artwork is divided into three sections-middle, upper, and lower panels-each representing the terrestrial, celestial, and foreign worlds, respectively. The middle panel represents the terrestrial world, emphasizing the present and future succession of the imperial family. At the center, Emperor Tiberius sits semi-nude on a throne, asserting his authority as a sacred ruler. Livia, symbolizing prosperity and stability, stands by his side. Young Gaius (Caligula) appears as an heir, imitating Germanicus, while Agrippina the Elder promotes the legitimacy of her children’s succession. Germanicus and Antonia Minor symbolize military achievements and the potential for succession, while Drusus the Younger and Livilla represent the empire’s peace and prosperity. Below, a despairing figure in Eastern attire signifies Rome’s military supremacy and the empire’s conquests. The upper panel represents the celestial world, symbolizing the divinity and legitimacy of the Julio-Claudian dynasty’s rule. Julius Caesar and Augustus emphasize their political legacy and moral governance, respectively. Alexander the Great is depicted as an ideal model of leadership, while Cupid symbolizes the sacred lineage of the imperial family, and Pegasus represents virtue and immortality, highlighting the dynasty’s glory and continuity. The lower panel portrays the foreign world, illustrating Rome’s military victories and political dominance. Conquered Germanic tribes and their leaders emphasize their differences from the Romans, while the defeated figures in various poses symbolize Rome’s triumphs and the integration of the empire. The depiction of subjugated peoples reflects the unification and dominance of the Roman state. Overall, the Grand Cameo of France is evaluated as an iconic work of art that glorifies the authority of the imperial family, the ideals of Pax Romana, and the greatness of the Roman Empire.
