제주 산지천 하류의 역사 경관 변화에 관한 시계열적 연구

국문 초록

본 논문은 ‘제주 산지천 하류’의 역사적 층위와 경관적 가치를 재조명하여 장소적 중요성과 기억의 궤적을 시계열적으로 면밀히 되짚어보았다. 그 결과 조선시대 목민관들은 이곳에 유교적 미의식을 가미해 주요 정자 및 문루 등을 건립함으로써 유교적 인문경관으로 변화시켰다. 한편 일제강점기에 접어들어 제주측후소를 비롯한 제주공원·제주신사 등이 건립됨으로써 식민지 지배 경관으로의 변화를 겪었다. 그리고 해방 후 식민지 잔재 청산에 따라 제주신사가 훼철됨과 동시에 한국전쟁 발발 후 ‘기독교대한감리회’라는 종교단체가 유입되어 전통 경관의 회복이 아닌, 새로운 종교 경관으로의 변화를 맞게 된다. 이후 근래에 들어서 제주측후소의 후신인 제주지방기상청의 증축과 관련해 전통 경관을 복원시키고자 하는 움직임이 대두되었고, 미완성된 채 현재에 이르고 있다. 이렇듯 해당 공간은 시대별 역사 경관적 이념과 가치에 따라 그 경관이 변화되긴 하였지만, 시대 변화에 상관없이 당대 가장 상징성을 지닌 중요 공간으로서 선호되는 경향이 되풀이되어 나타남을 확인할 수 있다.

영문 초록

This study examines the historical layers and scenic values of the lower Sanjicheon Stream in Jeju were revisited to explore the trajectory of place meaning and memory. As a result, During the Joseon Dynasty, local government officials(mokmingwan) transformed the area into a Confucian humanistic landscape by building central pavilions and gates with Confucian aesthetics. Meanwhile, during the Japanese occupation, Jeju Park and Jeju Shrine were built, including the Jeju Meteorological Observatory and the area was transformed into a colonial landscape. After liberation, the Jeju shrines were destroyed as part of the liquidation of colonial remnants, and after the outbreak of the Korean War, a religious organization called the Methodist Church was introduced, resulting in a change to a new religious landscape rather than a restoration of the traditional landscape. In recent, a movement to restore the traditional landscape emerged in connection with the expansion of the Jeju Regional Meteorological Administration, but it remains unfinished to this day. Like this it was found that although the landscape of the space changed according to the historical landscape ideologies and values of each era, it was repeatedly favored as the most symbolic and essential space of the time regardless of the changes.
