내포지역 교우촌의 입지 조건 및 특징

국문 초록

‘신앙의 못자리’로 일컬어지는 ‘내포’는 한국 천주교사에서 중요한 위치를 차지하는 지역이다. 한양·경기 지역과의 지리적 인접성과 발달한수로 교통 등이 그 배경이 되었다. 이 논문은 이러한 지리적 배경들이내포 천주교 교우촌의 형성과 변화에 어떻게 영향을 미쳤는지를 알아보는 데 목적이 있다. 또한 지형적 특징과 양인 중심의 마을 공동체, 근대시기 다양한 국내·외 정세 등의 지리·역사·문화적 요소들을 교우촌의형성·변화와 연결하여 설명해보고자 하였다. 그 결과로 다음과 같은 결론을 얻었다. 첫째, 내포교우촌은 세계사적으로도 유례가 없는 독특한 문화 유산이다. 둘째, 18세기 후반부터 20세기 초반까지 빠르게 변화하던 국내외정세를 반영한 역사적 산물이다. 셋째, 양인 중심의 신자 구성과 밀접한관련이 있다. 넷째, 박해 정도에 따라 평야와 산지를 오갔으며, 입지가변화함에 따라 마을의 기능과 경관도 함께 변화하였다. 다섯째, 편마암산지의 생태적 잠재력, 협곡 등 독특한 자연환경을 반영하였다.

영문 초록

Naepo, ‘The Seedbed of Catholic Faith’ is an important region in thehistory of Korean Catholic. There are two major backgrounds that makeNaepo as a significant region. Naepo is not only geographically close toHanyang and Gyeoungi Province, also had developed water transportsystem. The purpose of this paper is finding out how those geographicalbackgrounds make and change a village of catholic believers in Naepo. Also I will explain about geographic, historical and cultural factors, such astopographical features, a village based on commoners and various domesticand foreign circumstances in modern period, that influence forming andchanging a village of catholic believers in Naepo. As a result, the followingconclusions were drawn. First, it was a unique cultural heritage that is almost unparalleled inworld history. Second, it was a unique historical product that was created by rapidlychainging domestic and foreign circumstances from the end of the 18thcentury to the early 20th century. Third, it was formed by commoners(low and middle class people). Fourth, Depending on the level of persecution, the location of it movedback and forth between the plains and mountains, and as the locationchanged, the characteristics of the village, such as functions and land-scapes, changed. Fifth, it was formed against the backdrop of a unique natural environ-ment, such as the ecological potential of the gneiss mountain and thecanyon topography.
