[서평] 조선의 수도 서울을 보는 또 다른 시각

국문 초록

이기봉 박사는 역사지리학자로 그가 다루는 분야는 신라사, 수도의 역사, 고지도, 지리지인데, 그의 연구는 산림자원, 지명, 독도 등의 문제까지 확장되었다. 이기봉 박사의 연구는 기존의 연구자들과는 다른 독특한 시각을 보여주는 것이 많은데, 신라의 수도 인구를 약 8-90만 명이라고 본다든가, 『대동여지도』를 히트상품으로 보는 것 등이다. 이 서평에서 다루는 그의 책 『산을 품은 왕들의 도시』 1·2는 그의 전문분야인 ‘수도의 역사’에 해당하는 책이다. 『산을 품은 왕들의 도시』는 전체 네 권으로 된 시리즈인데, 현재 두 권이 나왔다. 이번 서평에서 다루는 1, 2는 서울에 관한 것이다. 나머지 3, 4는 신라와 후삼국·고려이다. 이 시리즈는 ‘역사 인물 환생 인터뷰’라는 가상의 방송 프로그램에, 수도의 건설과 관련이 있는 인물이 출연하여 사회자들과 문답하는 형식으로 이루어졌다. 네 권이 모두 간행되면, 신라, 후삼국·고려, 조선으로 이어지는 수도의 풍경과 관련된 이기봉 박사의 기획이 완성되는 것으로 보인다. 『산을 품은 왕들의 도시』 1권에는 정도전이 출연하여, 서울을 조선의 수도를 정하는 과정과 경복궁, 종묘, 사직단, 성곽을 완성하는 과정을 얘기한다. 그리고 2권에서는 태종에게 창덕궁과 창경궁 건설에 관한 얘기를 듣고, 다음으로 광해군에게서는 경희궁에 관한 설명을 듣고, 마지막으로 19세기에 나온 지리지 『동국여지비고』의 저자로부터 조선의 정원에 관한 해설을 듣는다. 1권과 2권에서 이박사는, 서울의 궁궐은 ‘하늘-산-궁궐’의 3단계 풍경을 통해 왕의 권위를 높이려는 의도가 가장 중요하다는 점을 강조했다. 이는 기존의 풍수설 위주로 서울의 건설을 바라보는 시각과는 다른 것이다.

영문 초록

Dr. Lee Ki-bong is a historical geographer. His fields include the history of Silla, the history of the capital city, ancient maps, and geography, but his research has expanded to include themes such as forest resources, geographical names, and Dokdo. Dr. Lee's research presents many unique perspectives compared to previous researches, such as considering the population of the capital of Silla to be approximately 800,000 to 900,000, and considering DaedongYeojido as a hit product of time. Dr. Lee‘s books, The City of Kings Embracing Mountains 1·2, dealt in this book review, corresponds to his specialty, 'history of the capital city'. The City of Kings Embracing the Mountains is a four-volume series, and two volumes are currently out. Vol.1 and 2 dealt in this book review are about Seoul. The forthcoming Vol.3 and 4 will cover Silla, Later Three Kingdoms, and Goryeo. In this series, a person related to the construction of the capital city is summoned in a fictional broadcast program ‘Interview with the Reincarnation of Historical Figures’, and conducts questions and answers with moderators. When all four volumes are published, Dr, Lee's project regarding the scenery of capital cities of Silla, the Later Three Kingdoms, Goryeo, and Joseon will be completed. In volume 1 of The City of Kings Embracing Mountains, Jeong Do-jeon is summoned where he gives talks on the process of selecting Seoul as the capital of Joseon, and on the process of completing Gyeongbokgung Palace, Jongmyo, Sajikdan, and the city wall. In volume 2, we hear from Taejong about the construction of Changdeokgung Palace and Changgyeonggung Palace, next we hear an explanation about Gyeonghuigung Palace from Gwanghaegun, and lastly, we hear a commentary on the gardens of Joseon from the author of Donggukyeojibigo, a geography written in the 19th century. In volume 1 and 2, Dr. Lee emphasized that the most important aspect of Seoul's palaces was the intention of enhancing the king's authority through the three-stage landscape of 'sky-mountain-palace'. This analysis differs from the conventional perspective on construction of Seoul based on Feng Shui theory.
