국문 초록

본 논문의 목적은 대화편『향연』의 ‘사랑의 사다리’ 비유에 나타난 ‘상승 운동’의 의미를 고찰하고, 그것에 함의된 학습과 교수의 의미를 밝히는 것에 있다. 상승 운동에는 ‘사람에 대한 사랑’과 ‘아름다움의 관조’가 공존하는데, 블라스토스는 전자와 후자의 특징을 각각 이타심과 이기심으로 규정하고 양자를 대비시킨다. 그러나 ‘사람에 대한 사랑’과 ‘아름다움의 관조’는 대비되는 것이 아니라 융합적 관계를 맺는다. 이러한 융합을 가능케 하는 것은 애자의 사랑의 산물, 즉 애자가 창조하는 ‘아름다운 말’, ‘좋은 이야기’ 등이다. 이 융합적 관계에 비추어 보면 관조는 아름다움을 획득하고자 하는 이기적인 욕망이 아니라, 애인를 성장시키고자 하는 애자의 헌신과 의지 등 오히려 이타성을 띤 애자의 인격을 반영한다. 애자의 사랑은 애인의 개별적 특이성에 대한 집착이나 소유욕이 아니라, 선을 향한 ‘완전한 존재’의 욕망으로 해석될 수 있다. 대화편 『파이드로스』에 나타난 영혼 신화에 비추어 보면 애자의 사랑은 애인을 통하여 신을 상기함으로써 애인과 자신의 삶에 신의 양식과 방식을 구현하고자 하는 열망이다. 애자가 창조한 ‘아름다운 말’, ‘좋은 이야기’ 등은 애자 자신을 보다 온전한 아름다움의 학습으로 안내한다. 애자가 창조한 ‘아름다운 말’과 ‘좋은 이야기’는 애자 자신을 성장시킬 뿐만 아니라 애자와 애인을 매개함으로써 애인의 삶에도 아름다움을 구현할 수 있도록 하는 교육 내용이다. 이 의미의 교육 내용은 중립적, 몰인격적인 것이 아니라 애자로서의 교사의 훌륭한 인격을 반영한다. 또한 사랑과 융합된 관조는 일련의 명제들 혹은 덕목으로 추상될 수 없다. 그것은 매 상황에 가장 적합한 방식으로 발휘되는 인격으로 해석되어야 마땅하다.

영문 초록

This study aims to clarify the concept of learning and teaching proposed in Plato’s Symposium, focusing on the metaphor of “the ladder of love.” The “upward movement” in the metaphor is to be interpreted as the process of learning undertaken by the lover. The upward movement involves “love of person” as well as “the contemplation of beauty.” Vlastos contrasts “love of person” with “the contemplation of beauty” when analyzing the structure of the upward movement. According to him, love of person is selfless while the contemplation of beauty is egoistic in its satisfaction of the lover’s desire for beauty. However, the love of person is transformed into the contemplation of beauty, and the two are merged. This fusion is made possible by “the beautiful speech” and “the good story” created by the lover. Considering the fusion, the contemplation of beauty is not satisfaction of the lover’s egoistic desire, but the altruistic state of mind originating from the lover’s commitment to the learning of the beloved. The lover is not obsessed with the individuality of the beloved, but represents the complete being for the good. If we consider the metaphor of soul in the Phaedrus, the lover who encounters the beloved, remembers God and desires to embody the manners of God in the life of the beloved as well as himself. From the perspective of the lover, the beautiful speech and good story guide him into the learning of the beauty. The beloved is able to embody beauty in his life by learning the speech and story created by the lover. The content of education such as “the beautiful speech” and “the good story,” which reflect the good character of the lover, are not to be considered impersonal or neutral.
