취약한 몸들과 능력주의 교육 너머

국문 초록

이 글은 능력주의 교육 담론 속에서 차별과 배제가 혐오를 통해 작동하고 강화되는 구조를 살펴보고, 혐오의 대상이 되는 취약한 몸들의 해방운동을 바탕으로 능력주의 교육 너머의 가능성을 탐색하는 데에 목적이 있다. 능력주의 통치성의 일부인 ‘혐오’는 사회적 위계와 차별을 생성하고 정당화하는 기능을 한다. 주체는 사회적 약자와 거리두기, 수치심 심어주기를 통해 혐오를 수행하고, 자신도 그 위치로 전락할지 모른다는 두려움을 바탕으로 능력주의 윤리를 내면화한다. 혐오의 대상이 되는 취약한 몸들의 소요는 능력주의 너머의 가능성을 상상하는 데에 실마리를 제공한다. 대표적으로 ‘장애’는 능력의 결핍과 손상으로 정의됨으로써 정상의 몸을 정당화하는 능력주의의 대항 범주이다. 장애해방운동은 취약성을 거부하거나 무너뜨리는 대신에 이를 공동체의 구성역량으로서 재개념화함으로써 능력주의에 대항할 수 있는 힘을 생성해왔다. 또 하나의 소외된 범주인 ‘동물’ 해방운동을 통해 대항적 힘을 정교화할 수 있다. 장애와 동물이 각각의 권리를 주장하는 과정에서 서로를 비인간화하는 담론적 투쟁 상황에 처하게 되는데, 이를 극복하기 위해서는 신경전형적･인간중심적･능력주의 세계관에 공통으로 대항하고 서로의 취약성을 공유할 수 있는 전략을 모색해나갈 필요가 있다. 교육철학연구는 교육에서 소외되고 박탈당한 존재들을 발견하고 그 힘을 재해석함으로써, 특정한 ‘표준모델’을 권력화함으로써 작동하는 능력주의 교육 너머를 기획해나갈 수 있을 것이다.

영문 초록

This article aims to examine the structure in which discrimination and exclusion are operated and strengthened through hatred in the discourse of meritocracy education and to explore possibilities beyond meritocracy education based on the liberation movement of the vulnerable bodies that are objects of hatred. “Hatred,” a part of meritocratic governmentality, functions to create and justify social hierarchy and discrimination. The subject conveys hatred through the acts of distancing and shaming and internalizes meritocracy ethics based on the fear of losing his or her status. The movement of vulnerable bodies, objects of hatred, provides a clue to imagining possibilities beyond meritocracy. Representatively, “disability,” which is defined as lack and impairment of ability that justifies the normal body, is a counter-category of meritocracy. Instead of rejecting or destroying vulnerability, the disability liberation movement has created a force to resist meritocracy by reconceptualizing vulnerability as a constructive capacity of community. The counterforce can be elaborated through the liberation movement of “animals,” which is another category of alienation. In the process of asserting their respective rights, disabled individuals and animals face discursive struggles involving dehumanization. To overcome this, it is necessary to devise a strategy to fight together against the neurotypical, anthropocentric, meritocratic worldview and share each other's vulnerabilities. Research on education philosophy can suggest education beyond meritocracy that works by facilitating a specific “standard model” by identifying alienated and deprived beings and reinterpreting their force.
