듀이의 ‘미적 경험’ 연구 동향 분석

국문 초록

이 글은 최근 10여 년간 교육학 분야에서 발표된 듀이의 미적 경험(aesthetic experience)연구가 이론적 검토와 실천적 적용 면에서 어느 정도 진일보하였는지 반추(review)한 것이다. 이를 위해 연구의 양적 변화와 내용/방법상 발전 상황을 전체적으로 분석하고, 내용적 발전의 여부를 좀 더 깊이 포착하기 위해 세 가지 질문을 추가적으로 제시했다. 그 질문은 첫째, 질성의 의미를 좀 더 폭넓은 학문적 맥락 아래 규명하고 있는가? 둘째, 교육적 경험과 미적(질성적) 경험 간 논리적 정합성을 검토하였는가? 셋째, 경험의 내용(교과)에 따라 질성의 유형이나 수준(단계)이 생길 수 있는지를 검토하였는가?이다. 이에 대하여 첫째, 질성은 미적 경험의 특성뿐 아니라 인간의 인식 과정 및 존재의 확장 과정까지 규명하는 개념으로 연구됨으로써 교육학적 토대를 지지하는 방향으로 해석되고 있음을 발견하였고 둘째, 미적 경험과 교육적 경험이 내적 가치와 수단적 가치 지향의 종합적 형태로 설명되어 두 경험 유형 간의 논리적 정합성을 추론하는 연구가 있었으며 셋째, 경험 내용에 따라 질성의 성격이 달라질 수는 있지만 수준이나 위계가 생기는 것은 아니라는 결론을 암시하는 연구가 있다는 사실로 요약할 수 있다. 연구자들은 위 사실을 통해서 듀이의 미적 경험 개념에 대한 교육학 영역의 연구가 내용과 방법 면에서 점진적인 발전 과정에 있다고 유추하였다.

영문 초록

This study aims to analyze the research trend of Dewey’s aesthetic experience in the field of pedagogy over the past decade (2014-2023) and briefly review the degree to which studies have evolved theoretically and practically. Toward this end, we first investigated the number, study content, and method and then presented three questions to infer the development of the study. These questions are as follows. First, has the meaning of quality (qualitative thought) been identified under a broader academic context? Second, has the logical relationship between aesthetic (qualitative) experience and educational experience been reviewed? Third, can the content (subject) of experience shape the type or level (step) of quality? The answers to these questions are as follows. First, quality (qualitative thought) was studied as a concept that identified not only the characteristics of the aesthetic experience but also the possibility of human perception and the expansion process of existence, supporting the pedagogical foundation. Second, there were studies that suggested the presence of logical consistency between the two types of experience. They addressed the fact that the two types of experiences are similar in that the fullness (internal value) of the experience itself and its value (means value) are combined as support for the next experience. Third, there were studies that made it possible to infer that although the nature of quality may vary depending on the content of the experience, there cannot be a level of hierarchy or superiority. Thus, it can be inferred that research in the field of pedagogy on Dewey's concept of aesthetic experience is continuously developing and deepening.
