후기 듀이의 지식론에 대한 성찰-키츠의 ‘절반의 지’를 통해서

국문 초록

이 글의 목적은 후기 듀이의 지식론을 키츠의 절반의 지를 통해서 살피는 데 있다. 키츠에게 진리는 사실과 추론 차원이 아니라, 상상력과 직관이 포착하는 것이다. 이는 불확실성과 의심을 수용할 수 있는 절반의 지와 소극적 능력으로 나타났다. 듀이 또한 이를 키츠 철학의 정체성으로 간주하며, 이 같은 맥락의 키츠의 지식론을 공유한다. ‘절반의 지’는 후기 듀이의 사고와 탐구, 지식론 측면에서 함축되어 있다. 절반의 지는 듀이의 사고와 관련하여서는, 사물 혹은 상황 속의 지배적 성질을 포착하는 질성적 사고와 이를 지성화하는 반성적 사고에 뒷받침되어 있다. 마찬가지로 탐구의 맥락에서도 절반의 지의 관련성을 논할 수 있는데, 그것은 듀이에게 탐구란 미확정 상황을 ‘상대적인’ 확정적 상황으로 변화시키는 것이기 때문이다. 키츠의 진리가 상상력이 포착한 아름다움으로 나타났다면, 듀이의 진리는 탐구를 통해 끊임없이 갱신되는 보증된 주장으로 제시된다. 물론, 이 모두는 절반의 지에 만족하는 철학이지만, 전자가 경험과 지식에 기초한 상상력으로 탈아적 관점에서 진리를 포착하려는 시인의 지식론으로 전개되는 데 반해, 후자는 불확정한 상황을 잠정적인 확정적 상황으로 돌려놓고자 하는, 상황과 상호작용하는 경험 철학자의 부단한 탐구와 경험을 더해가는 인식론적 차이를 나타낸다. 그러나 그 때조차 간과해서 안 되는 것은 ‘확실성’으로서 진리관의 폐허 속에 질성적 사고와 반성적 사고가 서로 교호하는 후기 듀이의 지식론은 여전히 절반적 지를 함축하고 있다는 것이다.

영문 초록

This article examines Dewey’s subsequent theory of knowledge through Keats’ half-knowledge. According to Keats, truth is not reached through fact and inference, but rather through imagination and intuition. This way of thinking emerges as half-knowledge and an incapability to accept uncertainty and doubt. Dewey also regarded this as the identity of Keats’ philosophy. The notion of “half-knowledge” is implicit in Dewey’s subsequent concept of thinking and inquiry and in his epistemology. It is supported by qualitative thinking, which captures the dominant nature of an object or situation, and reflective thinking, which intellectualizes it. These processes and outcomes of thinking gave rise to Dewey’s knowledge. Similarly, the relevance of “half-knowledge” can be argued in the context of inquiry, as Dewey regarded it as transforming indeterminate situations into relatively certain ones. If Keats’ truth is expressed through the beauty that imagination captures, Dewey’s truth appears as a constantly renewed assertion that is guaranteed through inquiry. Of course, both are philosophies that satisfy the idea of half-knowledge, but the former develops into a poet’s epistemology, which seeks truth from a transcendent perspective through imagination based on experience and knowledge, while the latter represents an epistemological difference that includes experiential philosophy and inquiry to convert uncertain situations to certain situations. Regardless, what should not be overlooked is that Dewey’s later epistemology, in which reflective and qualitative thinking are interrelated in the ruins of truth as certainty, still implies half-knowledge.
