국문 초록

교육의 중요한 목적 중 하나는 도덕적 인간을 기르는데 있다. 어떻게 하면 도덕적 인간을 길러내고, 도덕적 사회를 이룰 수 있는가의 문제는 교육의 지상과제라 할 수 있다. 우리는 교육을 통해 인간의 도덕성을 향상시키기 위해 오랫동안 노력해 왔으나, 도덕성의 향상은 여전히 만족스럽지 않다. 이에 최근에는 약리학이나 유전공학, 인공지능 등의 첨단 기술을 통해 도덕적 향상이 이루어져야 한다는 주장이 대두되고 있다. 이러한 시도는 생의학적 기술이나 인공지능 기술의 급속한 발전을 바탕으로 인간의 인지적, 신체적, 심리적 한계를 극복할 수 있다는 생각을 담고 있다. 이 논문은 첨단 기술을 통한 도덕적 향상이 가능하고, 바람직한지를 비판적으로 논의하는 데 그 목적이 있다. 이러한 목적을 위해 기술의 발전을 통해 도덕적 향상이 실지로 가능한 것인지, 설혹 그것이 가능하다고 하더라도 바람직한 것인지 대해 논의한다. 급속도로 발전하는 기술에 비추어 볼 때 기술을 통한 도덕적 향상은 가까운 미래에 실현 가능할지 모른다. 그러나 약물의 주입이나 유전자 조작, 인공지능을 통한 도덕적 향상은 인간의 존엄성을 훼손하고 자율적 판단에 의한 행위가 아니라는 점에서 진정한 의미의 도덕적 향상이라고 부를 수 있는지는 의문의 여지가 있다.

영문 초록

One important purpose of education is to achieve moral enhancement along with the growth of knowledge. We have long tried to enhance human morality through education, but this goal is yet to be achieved. Recently, it has been argued that moral enhancement should be achieved through technologies such as pharmacology, genetic engineering, and artificial intelligence. This paper discusses whether moral enhancement through advanced technology is possible and desirable. For this purpose, we discuss whether moral enhancement is possible through developments in technology, and if it is, whether it is desirable. Moral enhancement through technology may be feasible in the near future considering the exponential evolution of technology. However, it is questionable whether moral enhancement through technology can be called moral enhancement in the true sense. The effectiveness of drugs is temporary and may vary from person to person, and the law strictly prohibits genetic modification that is not for therapeutic purposes. Regarding the question of whether moral enhancement through technology is desirable, the issue is that moral enhancement through drug injection, genetic manipulation, and artificial intelligence undermines human dignity, and it is not an act of autonomous judgment.
