국문 초록

스티븐 버드(Stphen Brid, 1964-)는 영국의 전통 산업도자 양식에 다층적 내러티브를 투영한 작품으로 국제적인 주목을 받고 있다. 현대미술에서 내러티브는 포스트모더니즘의 예술가들의 다양한 작품 세계를 구성하는 중요한 표현 요소로 자리 잡았다. 본 논문은 버드의 작품에 나타난 내러티브를 분석하여 작품의 의미를 살펴보고, 커뮤니케이션으로서의 도자 예술의 가능성을 고찰하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 버드의 작품 분석에 앞서 문헌 연구를 통해 내러티브의 개념 및 범주를 살펴보고, 현대미술에서 나타난 내러티브를 랜킨(Rankin)의 내러티브 범주로 분류, 분석하여 이론적 근거를 마련하였다. 버드의 <인더스트리얼 사보자주> 시리즈에서 총 9점의 작품을 선별하여 내러티브의 구조와 맥락을 고찰하였다. 버드는 가정용 플레이트와 피겨린에 전형적 도자 표현인 청화 드로잉, 전사, 유약의 속성을 활용하여 사회 제도의 문제, 삶과 죽음, 사적 관심을 시각화하였다. 서로 연관이 없는 테마나 에피소드를 혼합하고, 언론 매체와 대중문화에서 추출한 텍스트를 부분적으로 수정하여 플레이트에 그렸다. 피겨린에는 이질적인 기호와 상징을 배치하고 세부적인 묘사를 통해 정지된 조각에서 상황과 인과관계를 표현하였다. 이러한 내러티브 구성 방식을 통해 원본의 내러티브와 의미는 감상자의 인식과 경험에 따라 재맥락화되면서 새로운 의미와 내러티브가 생성되도록 유도하였. 도자 매체의 전형성과 원본의 에피소드와 상징적 기호는 해석의 단서를 제공하여 감상자에게 친숙하게 의미작용 하는 역할을 한다. 동시에 버드의 작품은 개인사와 문화적 정체성을 투사하는 '내재적 커뮤니케이션‘의 표현이다. 도자 매체의 특징적 표현을 바탕으로 내러티브를 시각화한 버드의 작품은 커뮤니케이션으로서 도자 예술의 가능성을 보여준다.

영문 초록

Stephen Brid (1964-) has garnered international attention for his use of multi-layered narratives in traditional British industrial ceramic forms. Narrative has become a fundamental expressive element that organizes the world of artworks, as different perspectives and stories are addressed by postmodern artists. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the narrative in Bird's work to reveal the meaning of the work and to consider the potential of ceramic art as a tool for communication. Prior to analyzing Bird's work, the concept and categories of narrative were examined through a literature review, and narratives in contemporary art were classified and analyzed according to Rankin's narrative categories to provide a theoretical basis. A total of nine works from Bird's Industrial Saboteurs series were selected to examine the structure and context of narrative. On plates and figurines treated as domestic objects, Bird utilized the attributes of blue and white, transfer, and glazing typical of ceramic expression to visualize social and institutional issues, life and death, and private concerns. He blended unrelated themes or episodes and partially modified texts drawn from the media and popular culture to paint on the plates. Disparate signs and symbols were placed on the figureheads and detailed depictions were used to show the cause and effect of the situation. Through this method of narrative construction, the original narrative and meaning are recontextualized according to the viewer's perception and experience, and new meanings and narratives are created. The archetypes of the ceramic medium and the episodic and symbolic signs of the original serve to interact with the viewer in a familiar way, providing cues for communication. At the same time, Bird's work is an instrument of “intrinsic communication” that projects personal history, interests, and cultural identity. Bird's work, which visualizes narratives based on the expressive qualities of the ceramic medium, demonstrates the potential of ceramic art as a tool for communication.
