국문 초록

오늘날 샌프란시스코를 포함한 캘리포니아는 환태평양 무역, 인적 교류, 문화 교류의 중심지이다. 이러한 환태평양 메가지역의 연계성은 20세기에 형성된 것이 아니라 19세기에 이미 그 단초가 형성되고 있었으며 이러한 연계성의 확장 속에 미국 서부 태평양연안의 정착지가 건설된 것이다. 골드러시를 통해 급조 또는 급부상한 도시라는 이미지를 가지고 있는 샌프란시스코도 실제로는 골드러시 이전 전세계적 해상교역망이 태평양을 통합함에 따른 결과이다. 샌프란시스코는 미국 동부(또는 대서양)에서 케이프혼을 돌아 미국 서부의 태평양연안에 이르는 경로에서 계획적으로 개척된 도시인 것이다. 이 과정에서 그간의 양상과는 달리 동인도회사로 대표되는 무역독점에 반하는 자유무역을 지지하는 상인계층의 역할이 컸다. 초기 샌프란시스코의 형성에 있어서도 골드러시 기간의 항구건설, 19세기말 태평양철도의 연계를 통한 관문도시로의 공고화 등에 있어 미국동부자본가는 중요한 역할을 하였다. 골드러시 이전 이미 동방으로 향하는 지점으로서의 중요성을 상징하는 골든게이트라는 명칭이 샌프란시스코만 지협에 부여된 것에도 보듯이 샌프란시스코는 정착 초기부터 태평양을 횡단하여 동아시아로 향하는 관문도시를 목적으로 하여 형성되었다. 미국 태평양의 관문도시 샌프란시스코는 태평양 무역연계망에 통합됨으로써 더 나아가 이를 주도함으로써 중국의 변방인 홍콩과 연계되고 이를 통해 중국의 노동력이 유입되었다. 또한 태평양우편증기선의 정기적 운항과 상품무역을 통해 환태평양 메가지역의 초기적 연계망을 형성하였다. 샌프란시스코에 대한 국내 연구는 대부분 샌프란시스코 강화조약과 관련된 것으로 샌프란시스코에 대한 도시사적 접근 그리고 본 논문에서 주목하고자하는 환태평양 연계성과 관련해서는 거의 부재하다. 이에 본 연구는 기존의 전세계 무역망으로의 태평양 통합과 환태평양 연구에 대한 성과를 바탕으로 골드러시 전후 샌프란시스코에 대한 역사적 문헌을 검토함으로써 초기 관문도시로서의 샌프란시스코의 형성과 그 과정에 있어서의 환태평양의 단면을 밝히고자 하였다.

영문 초록

Today, California, including San Francisco, is a center of Trans-Pacific trade, human and cultural exchange. This connectivity of the Trans-Pacific mega-region was not formed in the 20th century, but has already been a major factor since the establishment of settlements along the western Pacific coast of the United States in the 19th century. In addition, San Francisco, which has the image of instant city that has risen rapidly through the gold rush, is actually the result of the integration of the Pacific Ocean by the global maritime trade network before Gold Rush. San Francisco is a city that was deliberately pioneered on the route from the eastern coast of U.S(or the Atlantic Ocean) to the Pacific Ocean around Cape Horn. In this process, the marine merchant class played a large role in supporting free trade against the trade monopoly represented by East India companies. In the early formation of San Francisco, New England bourgeoisies played an important role in the construction of a port during the Gold Rush and the consolidation of it as a gateway city through the connection of the Pacific Railroad at the end of the 19th century. Before the Gold Rush, the name Golden Gate, which symbolizes its importance as a point to the east, was given to the San Francisco Bay Channel. This fact shows that San Francisco was formed as a gateway city across the Pacific Ocean to East Asia from the beginning of its settlement. San Francisco, a gateway city of U.S. Pacific, was integrated into the Pacific commercial network and furthermore led it. Through this San Francisco connected to Hong Kong, and through this route China's labor flowed in U.S. In addition through regular operation of Pacific mail stamboats and the trade of goods, the initial network of links in the Trans-Pacific Mega region was formed. Most of researches on San Francisco in Korea are related to the San Francisco Peace Treaty, and there is little in relation to the urban historical approach to San Francisco and the Trans-Pacific link to be noted in this paper. This study attempted to reveal the formation of San Francisco as an early gateway city and the characteristics of Trans-Pacific by reviewing historical literature on San Francisco before and after the gold rush based on existing resarch results.
