근대 문예지 『白熊』 연구

국문 초록

1928년 충남 공주에서 2호까지 발행된 종합 문예지 『백웅』은 그 동안 자료의 희귀성 때문에 학문적인 논의가 전혀 이루어지 못했다. 소장자는 학문적으로 논의할 여력이 부족하고, 전문가들은 자료에 접근할 수 없는 사정 때문에 빚어진 현상으로 볼 수 있다. 필자는 2011년에 이 잡지의 창간호 자료를 분석한 논문을 발표했고, 이번에 이재우 선생의 호의로 2호를 볼 수 있게 되어 이 논문을 작성할 수 있었다. 창간호와 2호 잡지를 분석한 내용을 종합하여 이 잡지의 의의와 가치를 판단해 보면, 기존 학자들의 언급과 달리 동인지가 아니라 순수 문예 종합 잡지였다는 점, 우리 문단 초창기의 사정을 감안해 볼 때 근대문학의 주요한 자산이 될 수 있다는 점, 공주(충남)의 근대문학 출발 시기를 앞당길 수 있는 자료적 가치가 크다는 점, 중앙 집중의 문단 현실에서 지역 문학의 거점 내지 균형적 역할을 수행하고 있다는 점 등을 꼽을 수 있다. 또한 근대문학에 대한 관심 자체가 진보적이라 할 수 있는 시기에 이런 잡지가 발행될 있었던 사실은 공주의 근대를 더욱 풍요하게 만드는 중요한 사회 문화적 의미가 있다는 점도 평가할 수 있다.

영문 초록

“Baekwoong(白熊)” is a general literary magazine published until the second issue in 1928 in Gongju, Chungnam. Academic debate has not been made about this magazine due to rarity of materials. The present writer obtained the first issue after asking all around for it and presented a thesis analyzing the content. If we look the analyzed content of the first and second issues of the magazine we can find its meaning and value from the followings. First of all, this magazine is not a literary coterie magazine but a genuine literary magazine. Second of all, considering the circumstances of the early days of the literary world, it can be the main asset of modern literature. Third of all, its value to advance the starting point of modern literature in Gongju(Chungnam) is great. Finally, it works as a base or a balance for local literature in the reality of centralized literary world. The reason we could publish this kind of magazine in small town in the province is the result of dedication and sacrifice of young people who have commitment and sense of duty entirely on literature. Also at the time when interest in modern literature could be considered progressive, the fact that the magazine with this tendency was published in Gongju has an important meaning of making Gongju’s modern times more affluent. At the same time, because of this magazine’s existence we can confirm that Gongju is an important base of modern literature and this could be another thing Gongju can be proud of. I look forward to seeing interest in this magazine as well as continuation of in-depth discussions in the future.
