국문 초록

고구려에서는 애초 100일상을 지냈다. 하지만 3세기 전반 이후 장기간의 빈을 수반한 3년상이퍼지기 시작하였다. 빈이 길어진 이유는 왕실에서 고분을 축조하는 데 상당한 시간이 걸렸을 뿐아니라, 새로운 왕이 자신의 권력을 공고히 하려 했기 때문이다. 왕실의 빈소는 왕궁과 떨어진곳에서 소재하였을 가능성이 큰데, 빈이 끝난 뒤 시신을 실은 관이 무덤까지 이동하였다. 한편 고구려에서는 본디 후장이 이루어졌으며, 3세기 전반 이후 무덤 주변에 식수 행위도 나타났다. 그러나 4세기 후반~5세기에 걸쳐 박장 풍조가 강해진 결과, 매장 시 죽은 이의 물품을 타인에게 분배하는 습속이 대두하였다. 다만 이러한 변화에도 불구하고 장례 시 흥겨운 분위기 속에서망자를 보내던 전통은 유지되었다.

영문 초록

During the early years of Goguryeo, people mourned for the deceased for 100 days. Yet the culture of three-year mourning spread out after the early 3rd century. In case of the three-year mourning, ‘bin’ (殯, preserving the body temporarily in a morgue) lasted for a long time. It was partially because it took a long time to build a royal tomb, but the more important reason was because the new king needed time to cement his power. Most likely, it is assumed that the royal temporary morgues (殯所) were located outside the royal palace. It is also assumed that the coffin with the body in it was moved to the tomb after the ‘bin’ period. Originally, in Goguryeo, grand funeral was enacted. Then, trees were planted around tombs after the early 3rd century. However, because the trend of simple funeral became prevalent from the late 4th century to the 5th century, the deceased’s goods came to be distributed to others. Despite these changes, the tradition that escorting a funeral in a cheerful atmosphere was maintained.
