국문 초록

본 연구는 고대 중국에서 나타나는 독특한 두꺼비의 모습인, 세 발 두꺼비의 형상에 관한 연구이다. 세 발 두꺼비 형상은 송나라 때에 문헌과 도상에서 출현하며, 장수와 복록, 재물 등의 吉祥을 의미한다. 신선 중에 劉海蟾은 세 발 두꺼비를 데리고 다니는 신선으로, 본래 全眞敎의 敎祖로서 중요 지위에 있는 신선이다. 명대 이후 유해섬은 봉두난발을 하고 활짝 웃는 개구진 어린 동자의 모습으로, 세 발 두꺼비와 함께 신나게 춤을 추며 허리춤에 동전 꾸러미를 차고 있는 형태로 변화한다. 이러한 도상을 “刘海戏蟾”이라고 한다. “劉海戱蟾”은 유해섬 도상 중 가장 널리 알려진 주제로, 명대 이후 궁중의 절대적인 선호 아래 민간에서도 널리 유행하였다. “劉海戱蟾” 속 유해섬의 ‘금화’는 본래 세속을 상징하는 ‘금화’를 떨쳐버리는 의미였으나, 민간에서는 세 발 金蟾이 상징하는 ‘재물’과 유해섬의 ‘금화’가 결합하여, ‘부’와 ‘재복’을 의미하는 도상으로 변화하여, 종교의 신성성은 사라지고 민간의 세속적인 기복신앙의 대상이 되었다.

영문 초록

This paper studies the image of the unique three-legged toad that has appeared in ancient Chinese narratives. This unique image emerged in literature and icons during the Song Dynasty, and meant a lucky omen of longevity, good fortune and wealth. Liuhaichan, Taoist Immortal with the three-legged toad, occupied an important position among Taoist Immortal as the founder of Quanzhen. After the Ming dynasty, the image of Liuhaichan was transformed to a mischievous boy with shaggy hair and big smile who was dancing cheerfully with the three-legged toad wearing a bundle of coins around his waist. Such an image is called Liuhaijxichan(Liuhai playing toad). Liuhaijhuchan, the most widely known theme among Liuhaichan’s images, was also prevalent in the private sector under the absolute preference of the court since the Ming Dynasty. Liuhaijhuchan originally meant shaking off of gold coins symbolizing the world, but the image of Liuhaichan was transformed to an image of wealth and financial fortune after combining wealth of three-legged gold toad and gold coin of Liuhaichan. Thus the religious sacredness has disappeared from Liuhaichan’s image and it has become the iconography of secular faith for the blessing of the private sector.
