국문 초록

린위탕의 첫 번째 소설인 《베이징의 나날들(Moment in Peking, 京華煙雲)》(1939)은 초기 창작을 대표하는 소품문과는 또 다른 측면에서 그의 문학적 성취를 보여주는 작품이라고 할 수 있다. 장편 대하소설로 구상된 《베이징의 나날들》은 소설의 시간적 배경이나 등장인물, 서사의 전개 등에 있어서 중국의 근현대사를 폭넓게 아우르고 있는데, 특히 정치⋅문화적 영역에서 활발히 활동했던 인물들을 그대로 등장시키면서 소설적 허구성에 리얼리티를 부여하고 있다. 중국 근현대사의 굵직한 사건 및 인물들의 배치와 더불어 가공의 인물들 역시 소설에 자연스럽게 등장시키고, 작가 자신은 소설의 시공간 외부에서 독자에게 사건을 중개하는 역할을 한다. 소설에서 그려지는 일련의 에피소드들은 많은 부분 실제 일어난 사건들을 배경으로 하되 린위탕의 허구적 상상이 더해진 것으로, 문학의 본질에 대한 그의 이해 속에 민족정서가 내포되어 있음을 보여준다. 중국 사회현실에 대한 린위탕의 비판적 관점은 동시기 작가들보다 객관적 태도를 유지하고 있는데, 이는 그의 자유주의적 정치입장과 함께 1936년 미국으로 건너간 작가의 이력이 중국의 상황을 보다 객관적으로 판단할 수 있는 기제로 작용하였다고 할 수 있다. 이에 본 연구에서는 구체적인 사건과 인물형상의 분석 및 화자의 역할을 통해 소설 속에 구현되고 있는 작가의 창작의식 및 시대인식을 살펴보고자 한다. 아울러 《베이징이 나날들》은 당대 지식인으로서 그가 기존 정치 및 현실에 대해 품고 있는 회의감과 그로 인한 선택에 있어 고민을 담고 있다고 할 수 있다. 그 과정에서 그가 제시하고자 하는 대안이 도가정신의 구현으로 나타나고 있는 바, 본 연구에서는 작가 내부에 존재하는 층위와 작품 속 인물들을 통해 형상화되는 층위의 복합적 상호관계를 살펴보고자 한다.

영문 초록

Lin Yutang’s first novel, Moment in Peking(1939), could be described as a work exhibiting his literary achievement in a different aspect from essays that represent his early writing. Conceived as a full-length saga, Moment in Peking widely encompasses the modern and contemporary history of China in its temporal background or characters, the development of the narrative, and so forth. In particular, he concurrently attains both the fabrication and reality of the novel by featuring figures who had engaged actively in political and cultural spheres throughout modern and contemporary Chinese history. Moreover, by shaping fictitious characters who seamlessly blended in the novel’s structure along with the arrangement of significant events and figures in modern and contemporary Chinese history, Lin Yutang plays the role of mediating events to the reader outside the time and space of the novel. While a series of episodes depicted in the novel is largely based on events that had actually taken place, they have been added with Lin Yutang’s fictional imagination, demonstrating that national sentiment is connoted in LIn Yutang’s understanding of the essence of literature. Such a critical viewpoint of Lin Yutang maintains an objective stance compared to other writers of the same period; as in the case of his liberal political standpoint, the author’s history of crossing over to the U.S. in 1963 acted as a mechanism that allowed him to judge China’s state of affairs more objectively. Thus, this study aims to examine the author’s creative consciousness and perception of the times that are embodied in the novel through the analysis of specific events and character formation and the role of the narrator. Furthermore, Moment in Peking contains his skepticism toward existing politics and situations in reality as an intellectual in those days and the contemplation over resulting choices. Since the alternative he sought to suggest in the process is manifested as the realization of the spirit of Taoism, this study seeks to analyze the complex interrelationships between the layers existing within the author and the layers configured through the characters in the work with a religious-cultural-psychological approach.
